New Victory Hall

New Victory Hall The Village Hall for Neatishead, Irstead and Barton Turf, Norfolk One outcome of this appeal was the formation of NABS (Neatishead and Barton Society).

History of Victory Hall

In the latter part of the nineteenth century the Preston family of Beeston St. Lawrence built a reading and club room in Neatishead where members would meet to chat and read a selection of daily newspapers. In 1919 the Reading Room and Social Club was purchased from Sir Edward Preston by the local population as a memorial to those who gave their lives in the Great War and

renamed 'the Victory Hall'. This became a popular venue for meetings, such as wedding receptions, parties, concerts, lectures and craft demonstrations and, in 1922, the Neatishead Victory Hall charity was established. During World War Two the Victory Hall was regularly used for whist drives, dances, Red Cross meetings and other social events, and the local Woman's Voluntary Service used the hall two evenings a week so soldiers posted nearby could have hot drinks and light snacks. The upkeep of the hall became increasingly expensive; in early 1970 an appeal was launched to raise money for alterations to the hall itself. In early 1981 the old kitchen was changed into a small meeting/changing room, and a toilet block and a kitchen were added. Over time the Victory Hall became increasingly unsuitable for general use so a fundraising campaign was started in the mid to late 1990’s to build a new hall. In 2007, at the third attempt, a £177,000 grant was secured from the Big Lottery Fund. The Victory Hall was sold in November 2008 for £127,000 and this money, along with more than £100,000 raised by the local community and over £70,000 in smaller grants, financed the construction of the New Victory Hall.

Village Screen - Monday 1st June
Based on Maggie O'Farrell's novel HAMNET (2025/26, Cert 12A, 125 mins) is a devastating and beautifully crafted historical drama that explores the profound grief behind William Shakespeare's creation of Hamlet.
Most critics agree that it is a "tearjerker" of the highest order, anchored by a career-defining and Academy Award winning performance from Jessie Buckley.

Village Screen - Monday 4th May 7pm for 7.30pm
We are looking forward to showing H is for Hawk (Cert 12A 119 mins), adapted from Helen Macdonald’s 2014 memoir. Claire Foy gives a career best performance as Helen who is grieving the sudden loss of her father. Foy reportedly trained in falconry for the role and viewers will delight in the lush, evocative imagery of the British landscape and soaring wildlife shots of the goshawk in flight. We look forward to welcoming you to the NVH where tea/coffee will be available for a small charge. Please visit www.victoryhall.info to book tickets. Or make a reservation by calling Christine on 01692 631347. Subject to availability tickets (£6) can be purchased on the door, card or cash.

Village Screen - Monday 6th April, 7pm for 7.30pm

Our film for April is The Choral (2025: Cert. 12A: 113 mins), a poignant wartime drama that unites the screen writer Alan Bennet and director Nicholas Hynter. Set in 1916 Yorkshire, it follows a local choral society struggling to maintain its traditions as its male members are drafted into war. Starring Ralph Fiennes as the demanding and controversial choir master leading a “ragtag” group of local teenagers and outsiders towards a performance of Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius.

New Victory Hall Annual General Meeting

The New Victory Hall Annual Meeting will be held on Monday 30th March at 7.30pm in the NVH. We hope to address routine business with a short presentation followed by a second presentation from Ian McFadyen on a potential project that could extend the hall’s eco-credentials, offset energy costs for the village hall and give some new community space and facilities.

We invite you at this early stage to join us and hear our ideas as well as share your own ideas and thoughts. Please see our website for further details: https://victoryhall.info/.
Afterwards there will be refreshments and an opportunity to chat.
