Car-Free Norwich

Car-Free Norwich Norwich could be the most walkable and cyclable city in the UK, with the cleanest air, it just needs political will.

We are campaigning to make this dream a reality, for all of the many health, environmental, financial, and societal benefits it will mean.

Last week's Car Free Day was another beautiful, joyous success. 11 streets were closed to traffic for parties - 9 in Norwich and, for the first time (as far as we know!), Great Yarmouth residents got in on the action too, with 2 street parties of their own ๐ŸŽ‰ย

Photos are from events on some of the Norwich streets: Romany Road, Vincent Road, Highland Road, & Hotblack Road. We would *love* to see more though, so if you have any that you're happy to share, please send 'em our way.

โฐย  Car Free Day 2026 is due to be on Sunday 20th September - get it in your calendar, and start conspiring to getting your street involved! We would love to see more areas taking part in this top bit of community building fun. Also, bears repeating that you don't HAVE to hold street parties on Car Free Day, you can do them whenever you please...get some neighbourly support and apply to NorfolkCC (link in bio). Let's reanimate our streets and return them to being more than just places to store our cars. ๐Ÿ˜Šย

๐Ÿšจ Action time! ๐Ÿšจ

Please email NorfolkCC to tell them you object to the Aylsham/Cromer Road ETRO ๐Ÿ™ย They are consulting on changing the operational hours of the bus & cycle lane from 24 hour to just 7am-7pm: this will put cyclists at greater risk of injury and death, and is likely to lead to more car parking within the lane too = more danger & more delayed buses ๐Ÿคฆย

Simply email [email protected] and tell them you object to the Alysham/Cromer Road ETRO. Or see link in our bio for suggested text & all the details ๐Ÿ‘€ย

& don't dilly dally - the deadline's the 8th May!

Ok, let's address this.

Starmer hasn't said anything specific about the NWL.

Except back when he was in Norfolk when he said the public consultation should be respected (vast majority against the road)

This is 'mood music' that isn't good when it comes to respecting the UKs wildlife protection laws and Natural England getting support to uphold them.

However, there is still the small matter of the vast and unjustifiable cost of this project.

They are revisiting whether to still fund the NWL road NOW.

So let's all remind the real decision makers that:

The NWL could bankrupt Norfolk CC

Alternative measures could achieve traffic improvements at a fraction of the cost.

This road is unaffordable to the UK - its 'economic benefits' are weak at best. This is poor value for money when the UK is cash strapped.

This title is a bit misleading as it's really about all forms of travel. Please take a few minutes to respond if you're 60+

Being able to continue driving confidently and safely can help people in later life stay in touch with their family and friendship networks, reduce loneliness and isolation, and help them to remain independent for longer.

Weโ€™re inviting older drivers to take part in our survey to understand their experiences of driving in Norfolk.

We will use your responses to help shape our future road safety campaigns and schemes in Norfolk.

You can access the survey here https://orlo.uk/older_driver_survey_ZBCvW
