The next meet is almost here and it's that time again... for those who are new, haven't attended before or for a long time and are unsure of what to expect or how our meets work, then I hope this FAQ will help out... (and yes, I post this every meet now but there is always someone with these questions so I think it is worthwhile to do so.)
How does it work?
It's very much an 'open' meeting, so people tend to bring Amigas (or related hardware) to set up and then use at their leisure, or to demonstrate certain software and hardware to others, as well as getting advice if there are aspects of their machine that aren't going to plan.
Do I need to bring anything?
No, this is not required. You can bring only yourself if you like! Of course we do need machines set up for people to use but you only have to turn up - however if there's anything of interest you'd like to bring along then do feel free. There are 12 screens at the Cafe and you will need a HDMI converter/upscaler if your hardware doesn't have HDMI built in (or composite leads) - talk to us about that in case we have a spare or we can help you find a suitable one to purchase. The Cafe themselves sometimes reserve screens for walk-ins and other reasons but there's usually enough and we can also bring our own screens to use on the other table if the size is suitable for them.
How much does it cost?
Nothing to attend! There's no entry fee or a need to sign up for anything. However, because the Cafe generously agree to host us for no charge, they do need to cover the costs of this so if you attend, please ensure you support them by purchasing food and/or drink on the night (hot, cold and alcoholic beverages all available).
Is there parking?
The closest car parks are St Andrews Car Park, and Barn Road Car Park either end of the street. Also you might be able to find some single yellow lines to park on in the vicinity after 6pm.
How do I join in?
If you've not been before and don't know anybody then it can be daunting! If in doubt then do head to the bar and speak to a member of the Cafe's staff in the first instance - they'll direct you to us and we'll do the rest. Or just say hi to anyone who's around and hovering around an Amiga. It's then just a case of sitting with people if they are showing any of their Amiga wares off and/or have a play about yourself, or jump on a machine that's unattended to play a game if you like.
Can I bring anyone with me?
Of course! It is open to all regardless of age, and there's no need to be a member or anything like that (or even have any knowledge of what an Amiga is) - the more the merrier as far as we're concerned.
What else happens at the meet?
It's mostly a very informal and relaxed gathering where you can chat and get to know people, check out hardware and software (sometimes we're even given new games to show off before they come out) and have a drink or two. Sometimes though we'll have a special demonstration of certain abilities of the Amiga and sometimes we have a tournament as well.
Can I bring non-Amiga hardware to display?
Although we're predominantly an Amiga group, most of us do take an interest in retro systems in general with a diverse range of preferences. The Amiga is one platform we all have an interest in so that is the priority - however if we have any spare screens, we sometimes do have other computers to use if people bring them. If there's the space available then we can accommodate this for sure.
