We’ll be revisiting one of our favourite musicians for Record Club next week, listening to Joni Mitchell’s iconic album ‘Blue’ released in 1971.

“Despite its vibrating aliveness, over decades, even as ‘Blue’ continually restored itself and redrew its borders through others' encounters with it, the album's reputation solidified. It became a classic — the most beloved Joni album, the most written about, the one that encapsulates the essence of her talent. Or so people say, putting pins in it. Over time, enough people put enough pins in the same spot and the music that means so many different things to different people gains an official story.” NPR

We’re returning to the The Artichoke for our ‘Bring Your Own’ vinyl sessions this month, where you can bring along your favourite records to share with fellow music fans.

Our theme is ‘Greatest Misses!’. We’d like to put the record(s) straight and celebrate those singles or albums that nearly hit the charts, records that were cruelly kept from the No. 1 spot, or albums or singles that you think really deserved to be a hit and be heard.

We’ll do our best to get through as many of everyone’s requests as possible, and if you would like to say a few words about your choices on the night that would be great. If you’d prefer to just sit back and enjoy hearing some excellent music, that’s fine too!

🗓 Monday 15 June, 7-9pm
📍The Artichoke, 1 Magdalen Rd

Free to attend and all welcome: https://reelconnections.co.uk/record-club/

Record Club is back at Tuckswood Library next week, listening to 10cc's 1975 album 'The Original Soundtrack'.

"The answer was to make a third album including, on one side, a heavy metal track about the return of Jesus Christ, a cartoon ditty about life and death, and surely the first ever example of Mancunian gospel; and on the other, a nine-minute tripartite song-suite about a night in Paris, and a six- minute love song which was never intended as a single but became a landmark example of the form." We'll be listening to (and discussing!) Supertramp's 1979 album 'Breakfast in America' for Record Club next week at King's Lynn Library.

"1979’s Breakfast in America is informed by two formative years, as Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson’s artistic impulses and creative philosophies continued to diverge. Where Hodgson dove into health and spirituality, Davies remained gritty and skeptical. The fault lines deepened. That mismatch is at the core of every track. The two worked independently, each contributing five songs to the final Breakfast in America tracklist. What could have easily collapsed under quiet resentment and industry demands became one of the most impactful and hit-rearing albums in all of rock." Paste Magazine

It's the final Record Club of the month next week, and it's an absolute corker... we'll be listening to Patti Smith's seminal 1975 album 'Horses'.

"Just like the downtown New York City from which is sprang, ‘Horses’ is marked by a sense of urgency and liberation. It is galvanising in its sense of purpose. But the word that defines it through and through is ‘Freedom’: the social and sexual freedom of the era, the artistic freedom of a crime-ridden and economically decayed city, the freedom of rock n’ roll, the freedom of Burroughs’ Johnny and The Wild Boys, the freedom of wild horses." Classic Album Sundays

🗓 Wednesday 27 May, 5.30pm

We’re marking the 70th anniversary of a classic album that redefined romance this week for Record Club, with 'Songs for Swingin' Lovers!’ released in 1956 by Frank Sinatra.

“Sinatra didn't just sing great songs, he took them off the market by making each performance the definitive interpretation of the song. He was also the first major artist to record concept albums—well before The Beatles and The Who ever sang their first notes.” Sarah Zupko, PopMatters

After listening to the album in full, we’ll be celebrating the life and music of the ‘Chairman of the Board’ with a selection of hits and deep cuts from across his remarkable career. Facilitated by our very own Sinatra aficionado Guy Martin.
