East Anglian Air Ambulance has been tasked to the major incident in Bedfordshire today and both our critical care teams have been in attendance.

Please follow emergency service advice and only call 999 in an emergency. Please do not visit the scene while emergency services are responding.

We are working alongside colleagues from Essex & Herts Air Ambulance, London’s Air Ambulance, Magpas Air Ambulance, Midlands Air Ambulance, The Air Ambulance Service and other emergency service partners.

We have dispatched a large number of resources, including the air ambulance and our Hazardous Area Response Team, to a major incident on the railway line south of Bedford. We encourage people to avoid the area.

Further updates will be provided in due course. Please only call 999 in an emergency.

We're proud to share that East Anglian Air Ambulance's Norwich base has been rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, the highest possible rating awarded by the independent regulator.

The CQC found that "everyone working at the charity's Norwich base championed a culture of empathy, teamwork, and continuous improvement to give people the best possible care."

The service was also recognised for innovating and contributing to national guidance, with Helimed House leading research into how to better diagnose bleeds on the brain and how to better manage cardiac arrests.

Victor Inyang, Medical Director at East Anglian Air Ambulance, said: "This Outstanding rating is a powerful reflection of the dedication, professionalism and compassion shown by every member of our team. Day in, day out, our crews and charity staff go above and beyond to deliver the highest standard of care to our patients. Patients are at the heart of everything we do, and this recognition reinforces our commitment to providing the very best care when it matters most.

We are incredibly proud to serve the people of East Anglia. As a charity, our ability to deliver this lifesaving service relies on the generous support of our communities, and we are deeply grateful for the part they play in making this possible."

"If it wasn't for the blood given to him at the scene, I wouldn't have Joe now." πŸ’› (Joe's Mum, Jackie)

Today is World Blood Donor Day, and Joe’s story is a powerful reminder of how blood donations save lives.

Just before Christmas 2022, Joe was critically injured in a road collision near Thetford. Our crew gave him a blood transfusion at the roadside, something we have been able to do since 2021, giving him the best possible chance of survival.

Every blood donation has the power to save a life. 🩸

Every step of the patient journey matters and our crews work tirelessly to give critically ill and injured patients the best possible chance of survival and recovery. But our work doesn't stop when we land. Getting patients swiftly into specialist care is just as vital, and that's where hospital helipads come in.

Last week our CEO, Matthew Jones, was at the House of Commons for a Parliamentary Reception, joining colleagues from 17 air ambulance charities across the UK in support of an important national campaign.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Air Ambulances has published a report highlighting a clear national gap in 24/7 hospital helipad provision. For many of the patients we fly, timely access to definitive care isn't simply desirable. It is essential. Without reliable, on-site access, patients face critical delays to their care at the very moment they need it most.

We are calling for consistent, safeguarded 24/7 helipad access at all Major Trauma Centres and specialist hospitals, and we need your help.

Earlier today, we welcomed former East Anglian Air Ambulance pilot, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, back to our Norwich base.

This visit, however, saw him take on a slightly different role - delivering lifesaving blood for tonight’s shift.

Following a generous personal donation to Norfolk Blood Bikes, which enabled the charity to purchase a new vehicle, The Prince of Wales formally presented the car at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital before collecting our latest units of blood and personally delivering them to Helimed House.

We rely on a consistent and dependable blood supply to treat some of the most critically injured people in our region. For patients experiencing severe bleeding, early transfusion can make the difference between life and death, giving them the best possible chance of survival.

We simply could not provide this vital care without the exceptional support of local Blood Bike charities, whose dedicated volunteers ensure our crews have access to red blood cells every day.

We are incredibly grateful to Norfolk Blood Bikes for their essential contribution, and to His Royal Highness for his generous and impactful support.
