Today was Sophie’s last session hosting Early Explorers, and this week we say goodbye to someone who has been such a huge part of Social Moments. 💛

Two and a half years ago, Sophie came along to one of our rock painting sessions. There was just one day left to apply for our Admin Coordinator role, and I’m so bloody glad she did!.

Since then, she has grown with us, stepped into new roles and got stuck into so many parts of what we do. From the pavilion to the studio and now Holy Trinity Church, she has helped create spaces where children feel welcome and families feel connected.

A massive thank you to Sophie for all the love, care, creativity and organisation she has brought to these sessions, alongside our wonderful Olivia. Together, they have made Tuesdays special for so many little ones and their grown-ups.

Sophie has been an absolute rock beside me since the early days and has been part of all the developments we’ve made along the way. I’m really going to miss her enormously, and I know Nakita, Olivia, our volunteers and our families will too.

To our Early Explorers families: I’ve emailed you with a little more about our plans for Tuesdays and how you can help shape what comes next. 💛

For today, though, this is about saying thank you, Sophie. For showing up, getting stuck in, caring so much and being part of our story. You’ll always be part of the Social Moments family.

Who does the Social Shop support?

The answer is: ordinary local households trying to make everything add up.

We currently have 246 households registered with Social Moments.

🏠 57% are two-adult households
💼 49% of our members are employed
🔑 45% own their own home
🍎 73% tell us that nutritious food is simply too expensive

That matters, because there is still a misconception that someone must be unemployed, living alone or in a particular type of housing to need a little support.

Our data tells a very different story.

In 2026, research found that a couple with two children renting privately would need to earn around £77,400 between them to reach a minimum socially acceptable standard of living. Even when both adults work full-time on the National Living Wage, they still fall short.

Our members describe the reality in their own words:

“Feeding three children on a single income can be challenging at times.”

“Time and money are my biggest challenges. I can sometimes manage these, but not if there are additional stresses.”

“We’re both paying off debts and sorting out our financial situation, which doesn’t leave a very big margin in our budget for a food shop.”

This is why the Social Shop exists.

Not to label people. Not to decide who is struggling enough. But to provide a welcoming community food project where local households can access good food at an affordable cost, retain choice and dignity, and make their weekly budget stretch a little further.

Because sometimes people are doing everything they can and the numbers still don’t add up.

250kg of surplus food. Four lovely volunteers. A whole lot of kindness. 🧡

Before our doors opened today, this team was busy sorting food, filling shelves and getting everything ready. Then comes welcoming people, packing, chatting and helping everyone find what they need.

Between them, they’re giving 12 hours of their time today. Choosing to spend part of their day doing something for others—and honestly, that kindness never fails to humble me.

To all our volunteers: thank you. You make such a difference to what we can offer our community. 🧡

We’re OPEN until 1pm today, with 250kg of surplus food available to share with families for FREE! 🙌

📍 Unit 4, Oaktree Business Park, Rackheath
🕐 Mondays: 1–3pm
🕚 Wednesdays: 11am–1pm

Everyone is welcome—no referral or income criteria. Membership is just £3 a year, giving you access to free surplus food alongside our affordable groceries.

Please take only what you need, with one basket per household, so we can share the food fairly.

Move more, feel connected, start with us 💗

Yesterday, I sent our mailing list a little email asking you to help shape something new: Stronger Together, our community movement project supported by funding from Active Norfolk.

I connected with Charly Willis | Women’s Online Fitness Coach last year, and what I love about her approach is how much she cares about empowerment, confidence and building strength from the inside out. Feeling good in yourself. Feeling capable. Finding that confidence to try something you didn’t think you could.

That’s what we want to bring to our Social Moments community, together 💗

But before we plan the sessions, we need to hear from YOU.

Would you like to move more, but something gets in the way? Perhaps it’s cost, childcare, time, low energy, feeling self conscious or not having someone to go with. Perhaps you just don’t know where to start.

Whatever it is, we want your honest answers so we can understand those barriers and work out how to make taking part easier.

We’ve got ideas, but your experiences will help shape what happens next.

On Tuesday our Early Explorers will be heading on a wild adventure as our theme is Jungle Animals! 🦁🐒🐍🌿

From 10:30am to 11:30am, children will have lots of opportunities for imaginative and sensory play as they explore our jungle-themed activities. They’ll be able to:

🌿 Explore and role-play with jungle animals amongst our pretend grass
🐍 Play with snakes and practise weaving them in and out of spaghetti
🐒 Get creative and make their very own monkey headbands
🎨 Enjoy our usual colouring and games
👶 Spend time in our baby area
👗 Have fun with our dress-up area

We’re looking forward to seeing the children explore, play and have lots of fun on their jungle adventure this week! Perfect to support the children’s development, imagination, communication and socialisation skills.

During this family wellbeing session pastries, fruit and water will be available for children, their attending adult is also welcome to a hot drink and pastry, all included when you book for just £2 per child.

Starting October with a little perspective 🧡

We often describe Social Moments as a small charity. Then we look at this map.

246 households registered. Close to 600 people supported through our services.

Behind those numbers are children, parents, carers and neighbours. People coming together for affordable food, a conversation, time to play, learn something new and feel part of a community.

This map shows where our registered households live, wherever we have enough location detail to plot them. Seeing that reach across Norfolk makes us pause and feel incredibly proud.

To our members, volunteers, team, funders and everyone who donates food, money or their time: thank you. You help make this possible.

Here’s to another month of welcoming people in and building connections.

Could you spare a few hours on a Tuesday to join our Early Explorers team?

We're looking for some lovely, friendly volunteers to help us create a welcoming space for local families at our Early Explorers sessions in Rackheath.

Every Tuesday during term time, Sophie and our Youth Ambassador Olivia transform Holy Trinity Church into a space filled with messy play, sensory activities, crafts, snacks, hot drinks and plenty of opportunities for little ones to explore.

And we could really do with a few extra pairs of hands!

What would you be helping with?
✨Setting up tuff trays, crafts and play activities
👋Welcoming families as they arrive
🩵 Helping parents and carers feel comfortable and included
🎨 Supporting children to enjoy the activities
🧹 Helping us pack everything away afterwards

You don't need childcare experience, we're looking for warm, reliable people who enjoy being around families and are able to get stuck in. Full support will be provided by the team.

Now THIS is a harvest! 🥕🍎🎃💚

This week we had the loveliest visit from Reverend Naomi, who arrived at Social Moments with an incredible collection of fresh, homegrown produce, store cupboard essentials and treats following the Harvest Festival at All Saints Church, Salhouse.

Each year, their congregation comes together at Harvest Festival and generously donates produce and other food to support a local organisation, and this year, they chose Social Moments. ❤️

Our wonderful volunteer Kerry, who helps us coordinate so many of our Monday donations and deliveries, and our Social Shop Lead, Nakita, were there to welcome Naomi and receive everything.

And just LOOK at that fresh produce! 😍

Every single item will make its way into our Social Shop and out to local families from beautiful homegrown vegetables to tins, pasta, cereals and all those useful cupboard staples.

A huge thank you to Reverend Naomi and everyone who attended the Harvest Festival and donated. We never take this kind of community support for granted. It allows us to keep good food accessible, reduce waste and make things feel that little bit lighter for families when they need it.

This is community looking after community. 🧡

Always Learning ❤️

It’s one of our three values at Social Moments, and it doesn’t just apply to our programmes. It applies to how we lead and develop our organisation too.

This week our CEO, Chantelle, spent time alongside other charity leaders as part of an Action Learning Set facilitated by Rebecca White .

These sessions create space to step away from day-to-day delivery, explore real challenges, ask better questions, learn from the experiences of others and take practical ideas back into our organisations.

For a small charity, opportunities like this are incredibly valuable.

Investing time in leadership, governance and learning helps us build a stronger organisation behind the scenes, so that we can continue creating welcoming, sustainable services for the families and communities we work alongside.

A huge thank you to Rebecca for creating such an engaging and trusted space for learning, and to the brilliant leaders in this group for sharing their experiences so openly.
