😱 Someone's face was erased in fear from this 14th-century book! But who?

Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of the Macclesfield Psalter. Beyond the Latin prayers lies a fringe of monsters.

Take a look at the faceless figure in the slides. An early owner was so unsettled by the depiction of the Devil that they took a blade to the parchment to protect themselves from his gaze.

See this piece, on loan from The Fitzwilliam Museum, on display now in our current exhibition, Living by the Rule: Contemporary Meets Medieval, until 4 October.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of the ground-breaking visionary that was David Hockney.

Hockney was one of the most transformative and beloved figures in British art history. For over six decades, his pioneering spirit redefined how we see the world through art.

We were incredibly proud to share his genius with our visitors over the years, from his incredible portraiture in our 2014 exhibition, Reality, to his bold dialogue with antiquity in our Visions of Ancient Egypt exhibition in 2022.

“David Hockney possessed an extraordinary ability to look at the world afresh and demand that we do the same,” says Tania Moore, our Head of Exhibitions. “His generosity of vision, technical brilliance and unyielding curiosity will be deeply missed, but his works will continue to inspire generations to come.”

🍽️ How can eating together improve our lives?

An recent Oxford University study found a 200% increase in life satisfaction for people who regularly eat meals together.

But Saint Benedict identified the positives of communal dining all the way back in the 6th century.

Swipe to discover how his Rules could help us lead happier lives in the present day.

Living by the Rule: Contemporary Meets Medieval is now showing at the Sainsbury Centre until 4 October.
