On Saturday 15th August 10:00 – 12:00, we have an ‘Open Morning’, in Suite 2 Taverham Village Hall, when you will have the opportunity browse some of our archives and discover more about Taverham, share your local knowledge, and bring your items or simply meet the team.
Unfortunately, fewer than normal attended the presentation by Christine Adams due to a certain football match, but the forty who did attend thoroughly enjoyed listening to the more personal stories left out of her book ‘Miss Savidge Moves Her House’. The story of a remarkable woman who single handed dismantled and rebuilt her 500-year-old timber framed house.
Christine did captivate and amuse our audience in equal measure with her superb presentation when we discovered so much about Miss May Savidge’s life and of the 60-year-olds determination to rebuild her house taking the next 23 years before her death with much still to do.
I have had to rewrite this article several times to avoid creating a ‘spoiler alert’ should you be fortunate to hear Christine at another venue but as a teaser will say that you will hear all about a Lighthouse in the north of Holland, becoming a draftsperson at DeHavilland, motor cycles, river boats and an invitation to meet Queen Elizabeth II. In addition to her unique use of the Radio Times dating back to the 1940s, requests to the RAF and USAF, a connection with the Robert Opie collection to conducting a doctor’s consultation through a letter box.
During the talk we soon realised that although May & Christine were not blood relatives, Christine does possess much of May’s ‘women can do’ approach to life.
