What did the team get up to last month?

Jess M has been supporting a group of participants on the Isle of Wight, through our partnership with SNG - Sovereign Network Group, who are currently living in temporary accommodation, helping them build confidence and develop financial skills and strategies as they work towards having a home of their own.

For one participant, Mandy, moving into her current accommodation has been an important step forward. She has been exploring what she wants for her future, building her confidence and taking on new challenges, including driving across the island on her own for the first time.

Mandy recognised that moving into her current place, “gave me the push to be better. I'm more driven to try new things and succeed.”

What does a Facilitator at Your Own Place actually do?

It’s about much more than standing at the front of a room and delivering a workshop.

You’ll work alongside people to explore things like:

• Housing
• Money and budgeting
• Employment and skills
• Goals and aspirations
• Confidence and strengths

You’ll help create spaces where people can work things out for themselves, recognise what they’re already capable of and take steps towards what matters to them.

We’re growing and looking for a new Facilitator to join the Your Own Place team.

How early is early enough?

Homelessness prevention isn't just about responding to crisis. It's about noticing what's happening before things reach that point.

It might be when someone is starting to struggle with their rent, isn't sure they understand their tenancy, has lost work, or things at home have changed. It might be when they're not quite sure what to do next, or who they can ask.

But prevention can start much earlier than that too. It can be about building the knowledge, skills and confidence around money, housing and employment that can help someone feel more prepared and able to deal with things when they do change.

Sometimes it's about responding to something that's already happening.

Sometimes it's about putting things in place before it does.

For us at Your Own Place, prevention means having conversations early, listening to what someone is experiencing and helping them work out what might make a difference.

It also means recognising what people already bring with them. Their experiences, knowledge, skills and ideas about what could work for them and how they make and sustain changes right for them.

We don't have all the answers, and there isn't one route that works for everyone. But we do believe that listening early, and working alongside people rather than waiting for things to reach crisis point, can make a difference.

Prevention is also becoming an increasingly important part of the wider conversation around homelessness. Recent guidance from the UK Government highlights early intervention and prevention, including the importance of responding to people's needs early and taking a more joined-up approach.

If you believe in people and want to support them to recognise their strengths and make changes that work for them, we’d love to hear from you.

You don’t need previous workshop delivery experience. We’re much more interested in how you work with people, your values and your ability to build relationships.

What did the team get up to last month?

We’re excited to be getting the Community Voices Network underway, led by Emily. Bringing people together to build connections, share skills and make space for living and lived experience to shape our work.

We invited people who have worked with us over the last two years to get involved. In September, the group came together for the first time to agree shared values and ways of working, and to explore what “community” means to them. The picture shows represents a fraction of the skills the members are bringing to the group.

We’re looking forward to seeing what happens next!

What did the team get up to last month?

Mike has been supporting a participant through our Inspiring Change project who has spent time exploring what makes budgeting challenging for them, and what could help make it work better.

They realised digital tools and screens weren’t working, so they looked at what would make budgeting more engaging and accessible for them. They turned to embracing a creative approach, creating a physical budgeting tool alongside a graph to show where their spending makes the biggest difference.

They shared “I’ve been so excited about physical budgeting and the graph, I've been bringing it up and showing so many people since last week”
