What has...
🌿 The taste of the sea
🌊 The scent of the salt marshes
☀️ The feeling of a Norfolk summer?

Answer?

Samphire! And its' season has arrived.

Growing wild along our beautiful north Norfolk coast, this humble green plant has become one of the county's most celebrated seasonal foods — loved by chefs, foragers and coastal explorers alike.

But what makes Norfolk's samphire so special?

Our latest blog dives into the story behind this coastal delicacy, from the unique landscapes that help it thrive to the best places to spot it for yourself this summer.

And it's a reminder that the places we love most aren't just beautiful — they're worth protecting too. 💚

In Norfolk, samphire remains something simple and authentic - a traditional coastal food deeply connected to the landscape where it grows.

What happens when you bring together nature, creativity, community and a beautiful Norfolk meadow?

On Sunday, hundreds of people joined us for A Countryside Day at Martha's Meadow – and the result exceeded all our expectations.

Visitors explored the meadow, met local organisations, enjoyed art, photography, music and wildlife activities, and spent time discovering the remarkable work taking place across Norfolk to celebrate and protect our natural environment.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the day was hearing exhibitors tell us how valuable it had been to meet people who were genuinely interested in what they do.

"It's been great to get the opportunity to get in front of people who are interested in the kind of things we do."

"We've met so many like-minded people today."

Those conversations, connections and shared experiences are exactly what we hoped to create.

The event also raised over £1,000 for CPRE Norfolk, helping us continue our work to protect, promote and enhance Norfolk's countryside.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, exhibited, donated raffle prizes or helped behind the scenes.

Most of all, thank you to Adrian and Claire for opening Martha's Meadow and sharing the results of years of dedication to nature recovery.

The comments we've received since the event have been overwhelming, and we're delighted that so many people were able to experience this special place.

Sometimes protecting the countryside starts with something surprisingly small.

A few hours a month.
One meeting.
One conversation.
One person deciding to get involved.

This Volunteers’ Week, CPRE Norfolk is thanking everyone who gives their time to help protect the landscapes, coastlines and countryside that make this county so special.

But we also need more people to join us.

We especially need new trustees to volunteer to help guide the charity as we face growing pressures on Norfolk’s countryside from overdevelopment, loss of green space and changing landscapes.

The reality is:
🌿 You can volunteer remotely
🌿 It only takes a few hours a month
🌿 Your voice and life experience matter
🌿 You do not need to be an environmental or planning expert

Our roles are flexible, remote and require only a small monthly commitment — but the impact can last for generations.

You don’t need a background in planning or environmental policy.
You just need to care about the future of Norfolk.

Because the decisions being made about our countryside right now will shape what future generations inherit.

If you’ve ever said “someone should do something about this” — perhaps this is your moment.

This is your chance to help protect Norfolk.

💚 Message us to learn more about volunteering or becoming a trustee.

Tomorrow marks the start of UK Volunteers’ Week — and here in Norfolk, there has never been a more important time for people to stand up for the countryside they love.

The village views you grew up with.
The footpaths you walk with family.
The beaches, broads, marshes and countryside that make Norfolk feel like Norfolk.

Places like these do not protect themselves.

At CPRE Norfolk, our volunteers help ensure the county’s countryside still exists for future generations to enjoy. Some help at occasional events or shows during the year. Others give just a few hours each month helping guide the charity as trustees.

You do not need to be an expert.
You do not need lots of free time.
And trustee roles can be done remotely from home.

What matters most is caring about Norfolk and wanting to make a difference.

Behind every protected landscape, every campaign and every local voice speaking up for the countryside, there are volunteers quietly making it happen.

Could you be one of them?

As Volunteers’ Week begins, we’re especially looking for volunteers and trustees to help shape the future of CPRE Norfolk.

Because if people don’t step forward now, we risk losing the very things that make Norfolk feel like Norfolk.

Think about your favourite Norfolk view.

Maybe it’s a quiet lane near your village. A field glowing gold in late summer. The big skies on an evening walk. The sound of skylarks above open countryside.

Now imagine it fenced off, covered in steel, CCTV, substations and rows of industrial solar panels stretching for miles.

That’s why so many people across Norfolk are deeply concerned about the scale of proposed mega solar developments.

This isn’t about rejecting renewable energy. Norfolk people understand the need for climate action.

But once industrial infrastructure replaces open countryside, something important is lost — not just landscapes, but memories, tranquillity, wildlife, food security and the character of the county itself.

CPRE Norfolk believes there are better places for large-scale solar:
🏭 rooftops
🚗 car parks
🏢 warehouses
🟫 brownfield land

Not thousands of acres of countryside that future generations may never get back.

If you love Norfolk for its peace, beauty and openness, now is the time to speak up!
