JULY 15TH is National Give Something Away Day:
Giving benefits us all. It improves our community and puts much-needed services and assistance within the reach of those who need it most. The giver also benefits. Giving not only makes us feel good but it teaches gratitude, too. Whether we give financially or by offering our skills and services, we lift others up. Our words can be a gift, too. Showing empathy, encouragement, and compassion to someone during a time of need may make us feel vulnerable, but it empowers those we offer it to as well. You can also share your time with others by volunteering.

Most of us have the benefit of having more than we need to live. National Give Something Away Day on July 15 offers us an opportunity to share some of our bounties.

Celebrate GIVE SOMETHING AWAY DAY at our July Meeting:
Every year, on July 15th, people celebrate National Give Something Away Day. It's a day dedicated to the spirit of generosity and kindness. In the UK July 31st is also Friendship Day. So, this month at our July NASWI meeting we have decided to celebrate both days and invite you to bring a wrapped item to give away. Maybe an extra/not needed gift, something you've made, or something you would like to receive yourself. Please wrap it so it is a surprise for the receiver, and add it to the basket. Everyone who brings a gift may then themselves take a gift of friendship in return. We hope you will all join in. See you on Thursday 9th at our July Meeting.

Now in its third year, the Strut brings our community together to honour the women and girls whose lives have been taken by male violence and to stand in solidarity for a future free from fear, exploitation, and harm.

It’s a marathon, this protesting business. I’ve stitched pieces like this one (at my peak up to four a day) to protest Trump and his administration since 2018. My thought has always been that if the abnormal can be captured on something so normal, so simple as a hankie and thread, surely we can harness what is happening to create change. The pace of the “source material” is relentless and covers previously unimaginable acts and quotes from a president. I’ve taken every approach, from the satirical to sincere, but the scope of his language remains beyond measure.

Still, I stitch. Now, mostly words to inspire, to hold and create a more positive space (but one always sounded by darkness), and to offer a reminder of what we have to gain by change. I went for a walk with a friend yesterday. I shared my excitement about the Artemis II mission. She shared that she was too concerned by what was happening on Earth to invest in what was happening in space. I understand that too. Surely we do not need to leave this planet to value life on this planet? Surely we can see that this president is deeply flawed and dangerous. We don’t need words to tell us this. We can feel it. We know it. What are we going to do about it?
