Big C Cancer Charity Big C is here for anyone affected by cancer, from diagnosis and treatment, to life beyond cancer.

In 1980, two young men from Norfolk found themselves with cancer and having to travel to London or Cambridge for treatment, often finding this journey harder than the treatment itself. They vowed the people of Norfolk & Waveney would have access to the best treatment and support in their local areas.

40 years on, this is being realised daily, with nearly £30million raised by the local community since ‘The Big C Appeal’ was launched. Today our funding of surgical and diagnostic equipment at Norfolk's hospitals means increasing numbers of people can be treated locally and new equipment in hospitals has meant faster or less invasive treatment for a range of cancers. Our funded research across the Norwich Research Park has found some incredible discoveries into cancer and vital support for those affected by cancer is reaching out to those who need it, closer to them, in the local community. Today Big C has four drop in support and information centres across Norfolk and Waveney that are used by thousands of people every year affected by cancer. The centres in Gorleston, Great Yarmouth, King’s Lynn and Norwich provide valuable information about diagnosis, treatments, side effects and recovery. Trained nurses and practitioners are also there to provide emotional help, support and complementary therapies.

Since 1980, more than £12.5million has been invested in cancer research, helping to advance our understanding of cancer and improve care and support for future generations.

We are proud to be joining DKMS UK at their event at The Forum, Norwich tomorrow, Tuesday 20 October!

The event is centred around the work DKMS do in fighting blood cancer and providing stem cell donors. DKMS provide second chances at life for those in need of a transplant, and raise funds to cover donor registration costs. As the biggest stem cell register in the UK, they have helped to give over 2,500 people a second chance at life.

Our wonderful Support and Information Team will be situated at the front of The Forum to answer your questions, offer a listening ear and signpost you to any Big C services you'd like to know more about.

Today, we'd like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who took on a fundraising challenge for Big C in September - you’re amazing! 💙

🔹A huge thanks to Vix and Elle from Earlham Institute. They both completed a Skydive, bake sale, car boot sale and other fundraising activities in support of Big C Cancer Charity, British Heart Foundation and Arthritis UK. They generously donated £1,132.34 to Big C.

🔹We're incredibly grateful to Wendy Jones who hosted a Coffee Day at her home in Thorpe End on 26 September, raising an amazing £1,100!

🔹 It was a pleasure to visit Old Catton Women's Club, where we were invited to speak about Big C. Thank you for their warm welcome and generous donation of £50!

🔹 A big thank you to Norfolk County FA, who chose Big C as their official charity partner for the past two seasons, and during the Norfolk FA Volunteer Awards presented Big C with a cheque for £2,510!

🔹 Our sincere thanks to Sprowston Manor Golf Captains Graham & Peggy, who supported Big C with their Captains Charity Golf Day on 12 September.

🔹 Thank you so much to Downham Stow Cricket Club who donated money raised during the Steven Sexton’s Memorial Day, held in memory of a much-loved club member. Big C was able to support Steven’s family during an incredibly difficult time. Frances from our King's Lynn Centre received the cheque from Stevens parents Lynda and John, alongside members of the cricket club. They generously donated £1,500!

🔹 A huge well done and thank you to The Stanley NR3, led by David the manager, Sarah and Tanya, who held a quiz night and raffle on 31 August and raised an impressive £1,750!

🔹 Thank you goes to the wonderful UK Fishing School for holding their first Women's Fishing Match at Shallowbrook Lakes and raising £400 for Big C. The event was described as "three hours filled with laughter, friendly competition, plenty of competition and a great atmosphere around the lake. A brilliant first women’s match, a lot of fun and £400 going to a very worthwhile cause. We have a feeling it might not be the last."

Thank you to every individual, group and organisation, your support is incredible and makes a real difference to local people affected by cancer. Your fundraising allows us to continue to be there for people when they need us most 💙

Julia was diagnosed with breast cancer following her first mammogram.

The amazing staff at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust signposted her to Big C and at first she couldn't face going in and just wanted to go home. It was her husband Mark who insisted, saying "we’re going to Big C" and Julia was so glad because as soon as she arrived, "I just felt safe.”

Julia speaks with gratitude about the difference Big C has made. “I can sit here and honestly say that it’s changed my life, and for that, I will be forever grateful.”

We are excited to share that we are hosting a Slow Cooker Workshop on Thursday 15 October at our City Support Centre on Dereham Road.

The event will involve a nutrition Q&A with our Big C Registered Nutritionist, Andrea, as well as a delicious homemade meal, cooked by our Charitable Operations Area Manager, Tonia 💙

You will then be able to enjoy the delicious meal together in the warmth and comfort of the support centre.

Enjoy learning how to make simple, healthy meals to keep you warm in winter alongside a supportive chat with our lovely Big C staff.

Meet Gavin, one of Big C’s incredible fundraisers, who has a very personal connection to Big C.

Gavin will be running the Blickling Half Marathon on 18 October in memory of his mum, Vanessa Moar, and his dad’s cousin, our wonderful Big C co-founder, David Moar MBE.

Gavin’s mum, Vanessa, died of Pancreatic Cancer at the age of 73 following her diagnosis two years previously. She was fortunate to make it to her 50th wedding anniversary before she passed away. During her life, she worked as a nurse, for social services, as well as working with people with learning difficulties, something she did for 30 years, up until her cancer diagnosis. Gavin shares, “She always wanted to give people the best possible life in whatever she did."

“She was more than a mother and grandmother to us, she was our guide, our teacher, confidant, our advisor and our friend.”

When Gavin spoke about David, it was with love and admiration, saying “It is clear that the work that Big C does is testament to David’s nature. When looking back at the legacy that these two kind and generous people have left behind, I feel that it is only right to work at supporting the work that Big C does to help people, like both Vanessa and David did throughout their lives.”
