Our next walk and social event – Sunday 28 June, Trowse (south-east of Norwich) – walk followed by picnic and optional swim and more – it will be lovely! And also will illustrate the precariousness of permissive and informal access to these important natural spaces on the edges of our cities, so important for recreation, health, well-being and more, yet so many places are not accessible – or they are but then are taken away at a whim!
This waterway is navigable so access to it shouldn't be denied, but sometimes you can't get to the banks of our rivers.2Roam
Booking link for the event in our bio/linktree or in comment. We'll be able to send updates to those that book and that gives an idea of numbers. All welcome, but no dogs.

Norwich Right to Roam hosted the Q&A after the Norwich screening of new Documentary 'Our Land' which discusses the issues about Right to Roam, and we had a stall to give out leaflets and information about the local group and our next walk, and about the national Right to Roam campaign generally.
Many thanks to filmmaker , .2roam and from the BMC for being a brilliant panel, and to local group members and local people for making it a successful evening. Really interesting audience questions – it's such a thought-provoking and beautiful film – do go and see it when it goes on release shortly, and see our bio to get involved.

Trees and woodland walk for
Right to Roam Norwich had a lovely and interesting walk on Saturday 4 April, with 38 people, many came by bus from the nearby city and towns or lived locally. We walked along field edges, around woodland and ancient trees (including a very old field maple we measured at 3.5 m around and will add to the inventory), ending with a visit to the iconic Kett’s Oak at Hethersett near Norwich. We heard the important story of Kett’s rebellion in 1549 against enclosures and other injustices, and how this is still relevant today as an area that was once common was enclosed and is still held by the same family – but does not allow the public to walk here. We passed woodlands and ancient trees that are not accessible to the public. This is not unusual, as across the country three quarters of woodlands are not accessible and at least 1/3 of ancient trees – though probably more as you can’t get to them to add them! A responsible Right to Roam would allow people to appreciate and care for and about the countryside. Although Kett’s Oak is accessible it is on a busy road and it’s not easy to get to it from the public cycleway – but luckily a fairy bridge appeared in time for our walk and hopefully will be enjoyed for a long time afterwards!

Why are we doing a walk about woodlands and ancient trees? Saturday 4 April 13:30 – see Kett’s Oak walk in our bio.
In Norfolk we have more access to woodlands than many places, but there are a large number that we aren’t able to go to, and those are often on or fairly near people’s doorsteps. Ancient trees are often on private land and you can’t go and see them without trespassing.
Countrywide, groups are doing walks to bring attention to this, and out walk is part of this. Do join us, book and more info on bio.
If you go down to the woods today, you’re in for a big surprise - most of them are closed to the public.
The Government’s own figures show that 73% of woods in England have no known public access. This striking stat was quietly published in a March 2025 report by Forest Research.
And over a third of the ancient trees on the Woodland Trust’s Ancient Tree Inventory are inaccessible to the public.

What about in Norfolk? We do have the wonderful Thetford Forest and other Forestry England woodlands, most of which are dedicated as public open access, but many of these are concentrated in the Brecks (South Norfolk/West Suffolk border), and many only accessible by car, with increasing use of parking charges making access less affordable as well as it not being very near to where many people live.
