🚗⚡ Our Accessible EV Europe and England trip was just over three weeks ago, so we thought we'd share a quick round-up of our experience. ⚡🚗
Over nine days, we travelled 2,955 miles. During the journey, we visited 24 charging locations, all of which enabled us to continue our journey successfully. Altogether we used 18 different charging companies, and 4 companies were used multiple times.
⚠️ Some of the challenges we encountered included:
• Payment issues
• Poor weather
• Blocked charging bays – including bays occupied by non-charging vehicles, a lorry using a charger, and bays being used for parking
• Digital accessibility barriers
• Physical accessibility barriers
• Long charging times
• Security concerns
• Finding alternative charge points
• Chargers located too far off our planned route
• Good but less frequent charging infrastructure when travelling north through Spain
🌟 Some highlights:
• We never ran out of charge
• When battery levels became low, there were earlier alternative charging options on route
• Most charging locations had good facilities nearby
• Poor weather and mountainous terrain had less impact on the battery than expected
• Comfortable seating and great company made the journey much more enjoyable
💭 Our key takeaway:
Travelling abroad in an EV may be possible for some disabled people but we doubt it will become a practical or desirable option for many anytime soon. Current barriers will particularly affect wheelchair users and people with dexterity or balance impairments, not to mention those who struggle to use smartphones, apps, or QR codes.
📊 What's next?
We're still analysing the data we collected during the trip and look forward to sharing our findings and recommendations with you soon.
Accessible charging infrastructure is essential if the transition to electric vehicles is to be truly inclusive for everyone.
