Weekly Sightings:

Autumn is definitely here at Strumpshaw Fen with the days starting to get colder once again and migrating birds starting to make an appearance. More ducks are being sighted outside Tower Hide with Gadwall, Teal and Wigeon spotted this week.

Autumn is also a great time of year for fungi and fly agaric has appeared in our woodlands. You need to keep your eyes to the ground as well as the sky!

Weekly highlights

There's been a buzz around the Ivy along the start of the trails, as Ivy bees (along with Honey bees, Wasps and other insects) have been attracted by the flowers which are currently in bloom. The ivy bee is a relatively new arrival to the UK, first recorded in 2001. It feeds mainly on the nectar of ivy flowers, so they time their emergence to fit in with the flowering period of this common plant.

Regular species Bittern, Kingfisher all still being see well at the Reserve. Thanks to visitor Robert and our volunteer Elizabeth for sending these wonderful shots in. See sighting board pic for a longer list.

Good news for our colleagues working to protect nesting Ringed Plovers and Little Terns on Norfolk beaches. They have received the news that funding is secured to continue until 2029. Read more below ⬇️
