MOTHS

Did you know there are around 2,500 species of moth in the UK?

Our first moth morning of the year kicked off in style, with 48 species recorded in the traps (see picture below for species list). Pictured here are 3 of the most spectacular (clockwise from top) : Lime Hawkmoth, White Ermine, Scorched Wing.

The weather is perfect for our last two Scarcities and Swallowtails โ€“ Celebrating 50 Years of RSPB Strumpshaw Fen Guided Walks this weekend. โ˜€๐Ÿฆ‹

On the recent walks with Drew they have seen Osprey, Bittern, Swallowtails, Lesser Emperor dragonfly and, if it says around, a chance to see the Red-footed Falcon that has been seen this week.

Visitors to Strumpshaw have been busy capturing these photos of the Swallowtails recently! ๐Ÿฆ‹ Last week we had many sightings of these beautiful creatures across the reserve, and those in luck have still been able to catch a glimpse of Swallowtails outside our reception hide, between the showers. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

Why not join us this weekend on our Scarcities and Swallowtails โ€“ Celebrating 50 Years of RSPB Strumpshaw Fen Guided Walk, to learn more about how the reserve is managed for these and our other special wildlife and hopefully spot one too!

To round off volunteers week we are sharing this message on behalf of our colleagues running the Little Tern project on the Nofolk coast.

๐Ÿ’™ National Volunteers' Week ๐Ÿ’š
Little Terns are back on the Norfolk and Suffolk coast!

With nests that are little more than scrapes in the shingle and eggs that are perfectly camouflaged, these tiny seabirds need our help by giving them the space to thrive. A huge thank you to the dedicated volunteers of the Tern Around Project, whose hard work helps keep nesting birds safe each summer by empowering beach users to care about our coastline wildlife.

We value the wealth of experience and knowledge in a wide variety of volunteer roles and couldn't achieve the work we do to protect these birds without them.

โญ๏ธ We couldn't do it without you all! โญ๏ธ

Our volunteers are out on the beaches throughout the breeding season, so if you see them, stop by for a chat and find out more about these amazing seabirds. ๐Ÿฆ๐ŸŒŠ

๐ŸŒŸ It's volunteer week ๐ŸŒŸ

This Volunteers' Week, we want to give a massive shout out to the incredible team of volunteers who are the absolute heartbeat of RSPB Strumpshaw Fen.

Our amazing volunteer team supports the all areas of the reserve operations. Whether you are leading guided walks, repairing fences, maintaining habitats or monitoring our species, welcoming our visitors, we quite literally could not run the reserve without you.

To every single person who gives up their time to support us across all our different teams: thank you for your passion, your dedication, and your endless energy. You make Strumpshaw Fen a truly special place for both nature and our community.
Happy Volunteers' Week!

The excitement of new life is in full swing at Strumpshaw, and how better to show it than with the sweetest photos of this cygnet!

Cygnets are highly precocious children and can swim and walk just hours after hatching. That doesn't stop them hitching a lift on their mother's back for warmth and protection.๐Ÿฆข

See if you can spot them out with their family the next time you visit the Fen.
