OUT AND ABOUT: Pam C at Ely
Pam says:
Ely Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral which can trace its origin to the abbey founded in Ely in 672 by Etheldreda. The queen buried in Ely cathedral is St Etheldreda a Anglo-Saxon princess, Fenland queen and Abbess of Ely. She founded the monastery on the site in 672.
The Knife Angel stands 26 feet tall and is constructed by using 100,000 knives taken from the 250,000 that were removed from the streets by police during the amnesty of Stop Knife Crime.
The making of the Angel was done by a sculptor called Alfie Bradley, steel sheeting was the most suitable material to enable the sculpture to weld each individual knife, blade facing outwards onto the sculpture, he also removed each blade's handle and placed on the wings to give a feather like appearance.
Some of the blades used to create the wings are inscribed with the names of lost loved ones of the 80 or so families who support the project. The construction took just over 2 years to create with support from the police.
It travels the country promoting knife violence must be stopped. We were lucky to see it at Ely on a lovely sunny day which made it look golden at times.
