Why do people experience hearing loss?

Loud noises can damage the cochlea (hearing organ), causing permanent hearing loss and tinnitus. Exposure to loud noise is the second biggest cause of hearing loss - common causes include working with loud machinery, sudden explosive noises or prolonged exposure to unsafe listening practices from voluntary use of portable listening devices (loud music from headphone/earphones) and attendance at loud entertainment venues.

We are here to help you, whatever age you are. There is ample evidence demonstrating the importance of using hearing aids regularly to protect your brain health and quality of life.

Hear for Norfolk is a local charity with over 125 years’ experience of looking after people with all degrees of hearing loss and hearing related conditions. Being a registered charity, we strive to offer cost-effective services and pride ourselves in delivering high quality, reliable, responsive and accessible hearing services.

We are so looking forward to welcoming you to Norfolk Deaf Festival next week, at The Forum, Norwich!

This post will give you an idea beforehand of what will be where.

The Watch (outside The Forum building)
Comedian John Smith will welcome visitors both days, then get ready for the Festival Showcase with Deaf Rave, who'll lead an opening party on the Friday and close on the Saturday. They'll be joined by bubble and sign-song performers. Borrow a haptic vest to feel the beat!

Across the two days the outside space will be buzzing with circus performances, an interactive science display, signing choirs and more.

Main Space, in The Atrium
This is where a range of organisations and charities offering services and support will be. It's also where our Communication Station will be, where you can find additional support and your pre-booked tours with our deafblind guides will start from.

Family Zone, in The Gallery
Off to the left of The Main Space, will be the Family Zone. This will be where the Bear Ear Clinic will be based and the story-time sessions.

The Lounge, Level -1
One floor down you'll find The Lounge, divided into three areas:
- the gaming and workshop zones and Sunflower Snug.

The Basement, in The Auditorium, Level -2
The DJ taster sessions, the talk on AI and the chance to meet the BSL Advisory Board and share your views on the advice they give to government will be held. John Smith's comedy evening will also take place here.

The Academy in The View, first floor
Off to the right and up to the next level is where The Academy is - the place to learn new communication skills.

Hearing loss is a risk factor for dementia you can actually control

Hearing isn’t just about sound. It’s how your brain makes sense of the world and connects you with it. Simply put, we hear with our brains — and not just our ears.

Hearing loss is common as we age, and it affects nearly two-thirds of adults over age 70. But many cases go untreated — and that can impact brain health.

“When hearing changes, everyday conversations can take extra effort. Over time, that added workload may affect attention and memory,” says Glen Finney, MD, a behavioral neurologist at Geisinger. “And research shows a strong connection between hearing loss and cognitive decline — including a higher risk of dementia — when hearing goes untreated.”

The good news: Hearing loss is a risk factor for cognitive decline that you can control.

Did you know treating hearing loss can improve your brain health? It’s a risk factor for cognitive decline you actually can control. A Geisinger specialist explains.

What are the consequences of hearing loss...?

Most hearing loss is caused by the ageing process with about one-third of adults over the age of 65 having some hearing loss. This ageing of the ears usually affects our ability to hear soft, higher frequency sounds which results in the brain only receiving parts of speech thus being able to hear people talking but making it difficult to understand what they are saying.

Poor hearing in adults can have a great impact at both a personal and a societal level. Hearing loss can impair our communication, thus significantly affecting everyday life, causing loneliness, social isolation, loss of independence, low self-esteem, having feelings of anxiety and/or depression and can lead to cognitive decline/onset of dementia.

If you have any symptoms of hearing loss, it's important to get your hearing tested as soon as possible.
