Abby Innes, Associate Professor from LSE and author of 'Late Soviet Britain: Why Materialist Utopias Fail' will be delivering a talk entitled 'The Political Economy of the Green Transition: Will the Real Utopians Please Stand Up?' on 7 November at 6pm in Lecture Theatre 3

In this talk Abby Innes explores the three main economic approaches to the green transition – liberal (neoclassical) environmentalism, green Keynesianism and the ecological economic arguments for ‘degrowth’ – and argues that governments are failing to comprehend the essential utopianism of their current economic strategies. She also explores why it is that the economic arguments most rooted in the earth sciences – ecological economics – still get the least traction with policy makers, and what changes in degrowth theory might finally allow a more ecologically-rooted economics to take over from the orthodoxies of the twentieth century.

A great new project from Sainsbury Centre :

Plants and trees are embedded in our lives in many ways. They are planted ceremonially, they feature in superstitions, rhymes and children’s games. Particular species and their associated stories may be passed from generation to generation or brought into our homes to mark an event or calendar ritual.

Do you have a plant tale to tell? If so, we would love to hear from you.

Catkins Forever is a project led by Artist Ruth Ewan, who is working with people across Norfolk to unearth their personal stories relating to plants and trees. A selection of stories will go on display in Spring 2026 as part of the Sainsbury Centre exhibition season that asks, ‘What is the Meaning of Life?’

The 2025 Norfolk Community Biodiversity Awards nominations are open until 5th September. The awards are organised by the Norfolk Biodiversity Partnership.

Whether it’s restoring habitats, supporting wildlife, creating greener spaces or inspiring the next generation, we want to shine a spotlight on your local biodiversity heroes.

Award Categories
This year, you can nominate individuals or groups in one of six inspiring categories:

Young People's Achievement
This award is for individual young people under 25 whose efforts contribute to recording, understanding or action to benefit nature and biodiversity. Young people hold the key to the future for our wildlife so we are looking for those who are inspirational.

Saving Species
This award recognises individual or group efforts to improve the situation for wildlife species or species groups. With so many species in rapid decline action is needed at every level. We are looking for activities that directly benefit species populations or a specific habitat they rely on.

Rivers and Wetlands (excluding ponds)
This award celebrates groups or individuals who have inspired people to connect with their local river and wetland ecosystems. We are looking for activities that have helped communities understand the important role of Norfolk’s river catchments in supporting biodiversity.

Groups
This award recognises the achievements of groups working on biodiversity projects in their local community. Local groups inspire people to recognise and care for their local biodiversity and bring people together to work with a common purpose. We are looking for achievements for the group, as well as for wildlife and habitats.

Spaces for Nature and Wellbeing
This award celebrates spaces within communities for nature and people, whether large or small. This might be enhancing existing spaces or creating new ones. Action at a local level, by local people is vital to ensure a brighter future for biodiversity.

The Richard Waddingham Ponds Award
This award commemorates the great work of Richard Waddingham of Manor Farm, Briston, by recognising the achievements of community groups whose voluntary actions make a difference for water, wildlife and people via ponds in Norfolk.

Each nomination helps to showcase the positive action being taken for wildlife in Norfolk – and winners will be honoured with a framed certificate during a celebratory ceremony at The Forum.

🚲 Critical Mass Norwich: Ride for Solidarity

We’re riding to the Brook Hotel in Bowthorpe to stand against the far-right groups targeting people seeking asylum.

Asylum is not just a legal issue — it’s a racial justice issue. It’s a mobility and freedom issue — one that speaks to who has the right to move, to belong, and to take up space.

People fleeing violence and persecution deserve safety, dignity and welcome — not hate and intimidation.

Critical Mass is about community and resistance. Our streets — and our city — belong to everyone. That’s why we’re joining the protest to show that Norwich rejects racism, homophobia and fear.

🕧 Meet at The Forum (outside the Television and Movie Store) from 12:30 pm.
🚴‍♀️ We ride at 12:50 pm sharp.

💥 Bring your bike, your banners, and your voice.
💥 Show up for justice.
💥 Say it loud: No to hate. Yes to solidarity.

Reclaim the streets, resist the far right, ride for justice.

📢 A follow-up post will share info on possible risks, safety tips, and how we can look after each other on the ride and at the protest. Stay tuned.

Organised by Norwich City of Sanctuary, Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and Stand Up To Racism East Anglia.
