Musical Keys

Musical Keys Music & arts activities for people with disabilities and additional needs, celebrating self-expression, and equal access through creative participation.

Musical Keys is Norwich based charity providing a service to people with special and/or additional needs across East Anglia. For over 20 years, Musical Keys has developed a comprehensive programme of music, movement and arts based activities designed to enable participants to learn new skills, build confidence and improve motor skills and coordination through enjoyable and interactive sessions. Ou

r groups also offer a support network to parents, carers and families. We strive for equal access to music and creativity and aim to provide a service for groups who are isolated as a result of geographic location, social deprivation or disability. In addition to the numerous groups we run throughout the region, Musical Keys provides holiday outreach schemes and offers a bespoke service; our specialist staff aspire to adapt sessions to suit clients' precise requirements.

We had such a good time last night.

Huge congratulations to our amazing MK Ensemble for a joyous performance. Their brilliant new album, Adventures in the Microworld, was released yesterday on Bandcamp where you can buy a CD or limited edition DVD of a film made by Jay Goodman (which accompanies the music with macro footage and life in the undergrowth). It’s also available on all other streaming platforms.

Massive thanks to Mr AKA Amazing who treated us to some really great lofi hip hop. We’re very grateful for Duane, Jason and Tom joining us from London (big thanks to 54 The Gate)

Then MKE’s own Luke Saunders gave a performance of his brand new three track self titled EP. It was epic. (Also available on Bandcamp and all other streaming services!)

To finish everyone came together with audience and MK practitioners for some improvised music.

Massive thanks to David Ross Musics, Judy Splodges, Chris Dowding and Charlotte Arculus for their sensitive and playful facilitation of the Ensemble, and for our amazing community for coming out.

We are very pleased to release this EP from Luke Saunders via our Bandcamp site.

Luke has been attending the MK Ensemble since the start and has become an essential part of the group. Luke’s mix of rhythmic vocalisations and MCing bring a totally unique sound and perspective - often reflecting on the broader themes of the ensemble such as space travel and nature.

We hope you enjoy this EP. Please consider purchasing a copy as all proceeds will given to Luke to support more music making.

musicsongs and artsongs exhibition at Sainsbury Centre | Art Museum

On Sunday 5th July, 1-3pm, join Musical Keys practitioners Chris and Ian in showcasing artwork and recordings co-created with elders as part of these beautiful projects.

At 2pm there will be a performance of ‘dreamy soundscapes and overlapping loops’ by Sylvia & I, exploring the ideas of memory that have emerged from the projects.

musicsongs is a project where Ian and Chris spent time with residents in two residential care settings to chat about and remember what music means to people. Directly informed by these discussions a set of new songs were written and recorded, with the CD to be released as part of the exhibition (and shared with participant’s friends and families).

This will be a beautiful celebration of the meaning of music, and the music we’ve made in response.

Kindly supported by the RADCLIFFE CHARITABLE TRUST

We’ve known Robyn Rocket for many years, earlier this year she performed alongside our own MK Ensemble at Norwich Arts Centre and a couple of years ago delivered a fantastic talk about her experience, music and practice to our team of music practitioners. As a child Robyn attended one of our early years groups which she credits with contributing to the development of her speech at that time.

Robyn is a real force. The work she does in advocating for truly inclusive and accessible spaces and events, within the often very serious world of experimental music, is remarkable.

We feel lucky to know Robyn and to exist in the same musical universe. We believe in the intrinsic value of music making and that it is really is and should be for everyone, artists and audiences alike.

This The Guardian article is a great portal to Robyn’s work (we even get a mention). Please listen to Robyn’s music, attend a Robyn’s Rocket (perhaps one in Norwich at some point…) and continue to support music making and events that celebrate these rich and diverse communities.

Another new project :)

Chris and Ian are meeting residents from two residential care settings in Norwich to talk about their experience of music; what it means to them, the memories they hold, what are our favourite songs....

These discussions and group music-making sessions will inform the writing of new songs - songs about music! - that will be professionally recorded and shared.
