“My therapists didn’t treat me like a problem to be solved; they treated me like a person to be understood.”

When Alyse was at university, there were days when getting out of bed felt impossible and she wasn’t sure what the future would look like.

Determined to find support that worked for her, Alyse reached out for help and began a journey that would help her better understand herself and her experiences.

She describes Break’s support as ‘fundamentally different’ from previous mental health support because Break’s Emotional Wellbeing Service understood the deeper impact of her experiences growing up in care.

When Break's Louise met Tracy Beaker illustrator Nick Sharrett at the weekend, she never expected to come away with this. A signed drawing of one of the UK's most recognisable fictional characters!

For many care-experienced people, Tracy Beaker was the first time they saw care experience represented in a book or on screen. And whilst the reality for many growing up in care is very different to the show, what makes Tracy Beaker's legacy so interesting is that it continues to spark conversation. We had some very excited responses from Break young people when Louise shared it with them.

So we'd love to know: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮?

𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫.
This month, the Department for Education published its vision for putting 𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧'𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞.

It's a reminder of something we've seen over and over during nearly 20 years of supporting young people in and leaving care: 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫.

Whether that's family, foster carers, friends, mentors or other trusted adults, relationships can provide the connection, encouragement and sense of 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬.

It's a belief reflected in Break's Lifelong Offer, which we've been developing for almost two decades: to be there for young people who've been in care for as long as they need, 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 💙

Two Break teams entered the Sportspark UEA Business Games (Norfolk's version of the mini-Olympics for local organisations!). This year, they excelled in Tug of War, Cricket, Gymnastics and Pickleball.

But the biggest triumph of the day was getting to step out of their normal, life-changing roles for a little bit to spend time connecting and laughing together.

Well done team Break!
