The Yare Valley Meadow Makers

The Yare Valley Meadow Makers Creating wildflower areas along the beautiful Yare valley; for the local community and its wildlife We are a local community group, led by Matt Tomlinson.

Started in the first lockdown, when seeing the potential in strawberry field as a future wildflower meadow the landowner was contacted and we now work together to fill this green space with nature. Creating these meadows however takes time (3-5 years). We are supported and seek advice from two charities - PlantLife (of No Mow May fame) and the Norfolk wildlife trust. The fields position offers a c

rucial link to other valuable local wildlife sites- Eaton park (the two wildflower meadows), Marston marshes and the UEA. Thus we have created a vital link for many species to expand their range and move onto to other sites. Having full public access the field is well known by runners, dog walkers, nature lovers and hot air balloon adventurers.

We are delighted to share this poem by Jonny Croose.

Jonny is the Great Yarmouth representative of the Southbank Centre Poet in Every Port project, working his way along the Yare from source to the sea, writing poems as he goes.

Great News for Nature Lovers and Our Local Community

We’re excited to share that the much‑loved boardwalk along the Yare Valley at UEA is officially getting a full restoration thanks to sponsorship from Norwich City Council, funding from the Greater Norwich Growth Board’s Infrastructure Investment Fund and fantastic support from local partners and community groups.

The boardwalk has been closed since early 2024, and has been much missed by walkers, commuters, families, students, staff, and so many who use the route to connect with nature and travel safely between Eaton, Cringleford, UEA, NNUH and Earlham Park.

Now, a brand‑new 400m accessible, sustainable and wildlife‑friendly walkway is on the way.

What to expect:
✅ A wider, safer path with new seating
✅ A durable recycled‑composite structure designed to last up to 25 years
✅ Improved habitats and a reshaped pond
✅ New educational dipping platform
✅ Better signage celebrating the valley’s incredible wildlife

This project has been shaped by local insight from the Yare Valley Society, Eaton Village Residents’ Association and many others who care deeply about this beautiful space.

Construction will begin in autumn 2026, timed to protect nesting wildlife.

A huge thank you to our funders, partners and everyone who donated or shared their ideas - this has truly been a community effort.
