The Gathering Gates

The Gathering Gates Incubating community solutions, fostering collaborations and curating communal spaces where together we can face the challenges of our times.

Turning crisis into opportunity, and taking bold and imaginative steps towards a more just and beautiful world. Inspired by other like-minded initiatives -- and by a desire to act decisively towards bringing about a more beautiful world -- this project has been dreamed up by Liz Day, Jenny Haycocks and others. We see it as part of a movement of movements that is gearing up to unleash a wave of gr

assroots innovation and transformation. Our hope is that, by coming together in the intentional way we have envisioned here we will be better able to play our part in the rapid adaptation that we (and many others) believe is being called for in these times. Along the way we want to invite a living inquiry into how we can do it differently; drawing on collective wisdom, both ancient and new, and seeking to re-align our own human nature with the regenerative cycles of the natural world around us. Below is a summary of our vision - see our website at https://thegates.uk for more. And signup to our email list here:

THE DRIVER

This short statement describes the core motivation behind this project, the 'why' that is moving us to act. In the aims that follow, we set out the essence of how we plan to respond to what we’re seeing. We then offer an initial vision of what we want to bring about as we take steps towards achieving these aims. Multiple Emergencies

Our understanding of current world events is that they are the manifestation of a long-term state of crisis in the ecological, social and spiritual realms that has been unfolding for many years. As a result, the health and wellbeing of humans and all species appears to be in jeopardy and economic collapse seems all but inevitable. Does this resonate for you? What are you seeing in your world that might indicate we are facing dangers and perils in our evolutionary journey as humans? What does the word ‘spiritual’ mean to you? A Window of Opportunity

Many of us are also sensing at these times an unprecedented window of opportunity to radically re-evaluate and restructure our way of life. This is accompanied by a growing desire to realign ourselves with the land and with natural and universal cycles of regeneration, to restore our communal bonds, and to withdraw our consent from the structures that are destructive of life. Do you experience a unique sense of possibility at this moment in history? Do you have a sense of something seeking to align in you? How are you connecting with the natural world and with your community at this time? Creative Responses

We feel there is a need to provide spaces where we can gather together in person, in community, to take the future into our own hands and to set the tone for positive change. We also need to consider ways in which we may recover from what is evidently an epidemic of burnout and overwhelm, and to address the unnecessary suffering in our midst. In all this, we sense the need to invite ways of knowing (and unknowing) that go beyond the usual approaches that are no longer adequate. What would it look like to you to invite a collective focus on kindness, connection and gratitude? How would you name the things that deplete you? And how do you connect with what energises you? How can we think outside the box, invoking our powers of imagination and ingenuity in order to protect what we love? Towards a New World

We believe that attending to these needs, and addressing the questions they raise, will enable us to move from fear and paralysis and to fulfill a vision of freedom, abundance and liberation for all. This will involve, amongst other things, confronting an endemic loss of power and control at the grassroots level, and activating our innate authority to discern and decide, and to act together for the good of the whole.

OUR AIMS

Community

To grow a community based on shared purpose, collective meaning-making and connection with nature, tuning-in to the collaborative, mycelium web that is always-already here. Sustainability

To become increasingly resilient and sustainable on all levels: giving priority to questions, not jumping too quickly to solutions, seeking wisdom in the spaces between, and looking to the regenerative cycles of nature to guide us. Culture

To evolve a culture of integrity and creativity through collective learning and unlearning, seeking common ground, establishing bonds of mutual trust, exploring the gift economy, and activating the innate goodness of human and non-human nature.

---

FOUNDATIONAL VISION

Here is the continually-evolving vision that is guiding us as we begin to slowly put flesh on the bones of our aspirations.

The invitation with all of it is to be playful, to conduct experiments, and to bring on board all our capacities as well as the many different approaches we have come to trust. We also want to encourage a culture of active curiosity, of living with questions and uncertainty, adopting a practical humility and allowing space for what we don't know we don't know to emerge. Community Hubs

We envisage establishing one or more community hubs in this region, which may involve buying a piece of land or taking over an empty building. We are also looking to create opportunities for simply gathering together in temporary transitional spaces. A Shared Platform

As well as making our own offerings of events and workshops, we are opening a field of intention for developing a platform where we can share resources and support other like-minded projects. We envisage this will grow slowly and organically, and that it will support our collaborations and foster new synergies. Learning Circles

We're offering workshops and listening circles, drawing on specialist knowledge as well as everyone's experience and expertise. We want to develop our skills, resources and knowledge, as well as our awareness of what's happening in the world, as we navigate these times of radical uncertainty. Regeneration Mandala

Given the right conditions, all living systems, including the human body, move towards wholeness and wellbeing: life begets life. We've come up with a variation on the Medicine Wheel model as a way to reflect on how we might translate these natural processes of regeneration into our social and political systems. Regenerative Practices

We outline on our website some practices we hope might inspire you, and which we might explore together in order to become super-regenerative and super-sustainable. You will no doubt have practices of your own that you can offer and share.

Rebecca Stonehill, a fellow traveller on this path of longing and seeking for a more beautiful world, has a Climate, Nature and Life Writing course coming up soon. I haven't been on Rebecca's courses, but I can vouch for her compassionate heart, inspiring writing, and true devotion to both art and activism. Which, in my book, is a potent combination.

I'm sharing the flyer here in support and solidarity. And here's the website link for more info.

Can you help us? We are looking for 6-10 stackable chairs (in good condition) for community events in our lovely Beech Room in Carrow House. If you just have one or two, we'd still love to hear from you. There must be some lonely chairs hanging out in the back of a shed or cupboard, wondering about their purpose in life when they could be living their dreams, in service to gathering like-minded folk! Please tag a friend who you suspect has a secret chair stash or let us know if you can help.

Heart-centred communion every other Sunday starting on 12th October. RSVP at the link below - we'd love to share it with you.

We're excited to announce a programme of chants and prayers, an opportunity for coming together twice-monthly on Sunday afternoons for 'heart-centred communion' starting on 12th October (4 – 5.30pm).

The overall intention will be to connect with the sovereign knowing of our own hearts; to align body, mind and soul with truth, beauty and goodness; and to attune to the frequency of love.

We will be creating a vessel in which 'everything belongs'. We will be connecting with our spiritual roots both in the Christian tradition and in earth spirituality. We will also be leaning into other traditions with respectful borrowings where it feels congruent to do so.

It has been said that entering into Christ consciousness is about coming home to our sacred calling, our unique purpose on this earth. These circles will be devoted to facilitating this awakening and to building community through a regular rhythm of coming together.

The sessions will include:

• Simple chants and devotional songs (going deeper through repetition).
• Vocal improvisation and harmony (let's play!)
• Shared intentional silence (finding the stillpoint).
• Guided meditation and body prayer (subtle and physical embodiment).
• Words of mystical wisdom drawn from poetry and sacred texts (lectio divina).
• Shared ritual (or liturgy), which may include simple things like pouring water and making offerings.

We will also be exploring other kinds of ceremonies such as anointing with sacred oils, ceremonial tea infusions (connecting with different plant allies), cacao heart-opening rituals, and agape meals (a celebration of divine love). Initially we'll alternate between a simple ritual and a longer ceremony.
