One of the most common littered items is something many people don’t even realise is plastic pollution – the cigarette butt/filter.

Every year, trillions of cigarette filters are discarded around the world. They turn up on beaches, parks and streets, washing into stormwater drains, rivers and oceans.

If not picked up, these filters can break down into microplastics that spread into water and soil, impacting the environment and harming wildlife.

Today, July 4, is No Butts Day. People around the world are taking global action to remove cigarette butts from the environment, and spread the word about this widespread form of plastic pollution.
