The Night Shift in Our Garden 🌙

Here's another glimpse of what happens in our gardens while we're fast asleep.

Our resident mouse is out foraging for food alongside one of our visiting hedgehogs, peacefully sharing the garden after dark.

Although mice are sometimes seen as a nuisance, they actually play an important role in a healthy garden. They help disperse seeds, aerate the soil through their burrows, provide food for owls and other predators, and form part of a balanced ecosystem.

Every creature has its place, and it's wonderful to see our garden supporting such a variety of wildlife.

🦔📖 Newsletter Week 8!

This week we're sharing the next page of the Hampdens Hedgehogs Annual Newsletter, looking back at a fantastic September 2025.

One of the highlights of the month was attending the Costessey Fayre and Fête at the Royal Norfolk Showground, where we spoke to lots of residents and visitors about how they can become Hedgehog Champions and help protect one of Britain's most loved mammals.

September also saw our annual Hampdens Hedgehogs raffle, and what a success it was! Thanks to the incredible generosity of local & national businesses, supporters, and everyone who bought tickets, we raised valuable funds to support our community wildlife projects.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated prizes, purchased tickets, and helped make the raffle such a success. 💚

Adopt Your Tree Pit!

Two years ago, residents on Culloden Avenue transformed the tree pits outside their homes by planting spring bulbs and colourful annual flowers. The result? A beautiful display that not only brightened the street but also provided an important source of food for bees, butterflies and other pollinators. 🌸

The good news is... anyone can do it!

It doesn't take much to adopt your local tree pit:
🌷 Plant a few spring bulbs that return year after year.
🌼 Add an inexpensive bedding plant from the supermarket.
🌱 Sow a packet of wildflower or annual seeds with your children.
💧 Water them during dry spells to help them establish.

These small spaces can become mini wildlife havens, making our estate greener, more colourful and more welcoming for nature.

Every flower planted is another step towards supporting local wildlife—and it makes the Hampdens an even lovelier place to live.

"🦔 Need Help With a Hedgehog? We're Here to Help. 💚

Hampdens Hedgehogs is a small community group dedicated to helping local residents become hedgehog champions and making our neighbourhood a safer place for wildlife.

While we are not a wildlife rescue, that doesn't mean we can't help.

If you find a hedgehog you're concerned about, please send us a message via Facebook or Instagram. We aim to respond as quickly as possible and can:

🦔 Offer advice on what to do next.
🏥 Signpost you to your nearest wildlife-friendly vet, hedgehog first aider or local rescue.
🚗 Where possible, help transport hedgehogs to the care they need if you're unable to do so yourself.

Please bear with us during the summer months, as this is our busiest time of year for hedgehog enquiries and rescues. We're all volunteers, but we'll always do our very best to help or point you in the right direction.

Living Together in Harmony

One of our favourite sights on the wildlife cameras... a hedgehog and one of our neighbourhood cats sharing the garden, completely unbothered by one another.

Despite what many people think, cats don't usually pose a threat to healthy adult hedgehogs. Their sharp spines mean they're rarely seen as prey, and most cats simply sniff, watch, or quietly walk past.

It's a lovely reminder that our gardens can be shared spaces where wildlife and our pets can coexist peacefully.

By creating hedgehog-friendly gardens, we're helping nature thrive alongside the animals we love.

🦔📖 Newsletter Week 7!

This week we're sharing Page 7 of the Hampdens Hedgehogs Annual Newsletter, looking back at a busy July and August.

Our founder, Kitty, spent part of the summer raising money with Echo Youth Theatre for local charities, including Hallswood Animal Sanctuary, where many poorly, sick, and injured hedgehogs are taken for treatment and rehabilitation before being released back into the wild.

We were also heavily involved in supporting efforts to protect the fields and woodland behind the Hampdens Estate. A huge thank you goes to and all the residents who worked tirelessly to secure Tree Preservation Orders for the veteran oak trees and surrounding woodland.

These special green spaces provide an important habitat for wildlife, including hedgehogs, birds, insects, and many other species. We hope this area will remain protected for generations to come, allowing wildlife to survive and thrive.

It's been inspiring to see so many people coming together to protect both wildlife and the natural spaces that make our community so special. 💚🌳🦔

🦔💚 A huge thank you to for their incredibly generous donation of hedgehog food for this year's Hampdens Hedgehogs raffle!

Our local hedgehogs absolutely love Brambles food and never seem to get enough of it. 🍽️🦔

Thanks to Brambles' generosity, we've been able to include lots of bags of hedgehog food in our raffle prizes, meaning even more winners will be able to support the hedgehogs visiting their gardens.

We're incredibly grateful for their continued support of hedgehog conservation and for helping us raise awareness of these wonderful animals.

Thank you, Brambles, for helping both hedgehogs and the people who care for them! 💚🌿

🦔 August Community Litter Pick – Cancelled ♻️

With many of our regular volunteers away on holiday and enjoying family commitments over the summer, we won't be running our August litter pick.

A huge thank you to everyone who supports our monthly litter picks throughout the year. Your time and dedication make a real difference to keeping the Hampdens cleaner, safer and more welcoming for both people and wildlife. 💚

We'll be back in September with TWO litter picks, refreshed and ready to tackle the litter together!

Until then, if you're out for a walk and spot a few pieces of litter, please feel free to pick them up if it's safe to do so. Every little action helps.
