England kick off their World Cup campaign this evening and we’re sure that many of our followers will be eagerly tuning in to see if football can come home again!

Sadly though, as research by Women’s Aid shows, reports of domestic abuse often increase during major tournaments, especially when England are playing.

This is why we are sharing this great toolkit created by White Ribbon UK, which highlights how you can play an active role in ensuring that matchdays are enjoyable for everyone. It even includes guidance for pubs, bars, and other venues on how to respond to incidents and ensure that everyone is safe and has an enjoyable time.

Today is World Elder Abuse Day, an annual global campaign aiming to protect the dignity, rights and safety of the elderly. It is also an opportunity to highlight their experiences of abuse and the collective work that needs to be done to tackle this issue.

Domestic abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of age. However, this protected characteristic can add additional barriers to older people accessing support, particularly as they may be more dependent on their partner or family network.

Our NIDAS Norfolk service is currently running a campaign highlighting how domestic abuse can impact older people and we would urge you to check out their social media channels.

As the FIFA World Cup is about to begin, we wanted to share a reminder of the support that is available for anyone that may be experiencing domestic abuse.

Statistics published by Women’s Aid highlighted that cases of domestic abuse increased by 38% when England lost a match at a major tournament and 26% when they won or drew.

Major tournaments are often an exciting time but should not be used as an excuse for domestic abuse.

Please share to help us to raise awareness and reach as many people as possible, including those that may need our support.

Domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of age. That is why our NIDAS Norfolk service is running a dedicated campaign to raise awareness of how domestic abuse can impact older people and the support that is available.

We know that those experiencing domestic abuse can face many barriers to accessing support and campaigns like this are vital in removing some of these barriers, enabling survivors to get the support that they need.
