My best friend, Odin. His story continues! Yes his feathers looks awful but I am so so happy with the feathers that are there. And here's why!
As most of you know, Odin came to me in May last year approx 4 weeks old and so close to death. His legs and feet were twisted, he had severe white wing and was emaciated and dehydrated. I didn't expect him to make it through the night yet here were are over a year on!
He is fighting fit now with good, strong legs and feet. The real challenge though has been his feathers. With white wing the feathers become brittle and easily break. He lost all of his tail and all of his flight feathers yet the quills remained so no new feathers could come through. He kind of resembled a kiwi!
The occasional quill dropped and he would grow a new feather but without other feathers around it to support it it would quickly break off. Finally, this spring/summer he has gone into full blown moult mode and with a year of top notch nutritional support those feathers are finally coming!!!
So yes, in the photo he looks really rough but it makes me so incredibly happy that after all this time we have feathers! One step closer to one day teaching him to fly for the first time ever!
Sadly it's us humans responsible for the dreaded white wing. It is caused by a nutritional deficiency in the nest. Farmers spraying crops, housing taking over green space etc all causes depleted food sources and crows are forced to feed on 'junk food' which is not good for raising good, strong babies. We have a lot to answer for. Fortunately Odin was found just in time. By autumn he is going to look fantastic!!!!! ππ¦ββ¬
