Today marks the first day of Black Maternal Mental Health Week, and for us at , this is more than just a campaign - it’s our mission.
This year’s theme is “Transforming and Advancing Change,” and we’re here to do just that by shining a light on why Black maternal mental health matters so deeply.
As Black mothers ourselves, we understand the unique challenges our community faces. Here’s why this issue is crucial:
1. Disparities in Care: We’re 4x more likely to die during pregnancy or childbirth in the UK. This stark reality underscores the urgent need for equitable healthcare.
2. Higher Rates of Perinatal Mental Health Issues: Many of us experience increased levels of postpartum depression and anxiety, often without proper diagnosis or treatment.
3. Intergenerational Impact: Our mental health directly affects our children and future generations. By prioritising our wellbeing, we’re investing in our families’ futures.
4. Cultural Stigma and Barriers: We’re working to break down the stigmas and mistrust that can prevent us from seeking the help we need and deserve.
5. Link to Maternal Mortality: The increased risk of maternal mortality in our community is closely tied to higher rates of anxiety, trauma, and mental health challenges.
By transforming the conversation and advancing change, we’re not just talking about these issues - we’re actively working to create a better future for Black mothers everywhere.
Join us this week as we delve deeper into these topics, share resources, and support each other. Your experiences and voices matter.
