Today, 16th June 2026, Jamie McKenzie and Vic Smith did some work on the Eleonore House borders in preparation for more work on our Volunteer Day on 20th June. Vic cut back the straggling growth on the Field Roses at the southern end of the Herbaceous Border while Jamie strimmed the long grass at the edge of the Cornfield Wildflower Border (and later the other borders). The grass cutting machines can't reach the edge of the gardens without risking damage to the plants growing in them. Jamie also cut down some of the lower branches of the tree growing against the Eleonore House fence.

The cornfield wildflowers now need thinning and the herbaceous plants need weeding. One plant needs replacing and two new ones added to the border. The front edge of the borders needs smartening up and the garden extended to the south, where it used to be before Covid. The soil in one patch needs improving with the addition of a lot of compost.

The next FoEP Volunteer Day is on Saturday 20th June 2026. We will meet at the FoEP garage to collect equipment and then move to the area near Eleonore House for work (see map). Please either arrive before 10.30 am or go straight to the work area. Tools and gloves will be provided.

The herbaceous border needs weeding and a few plants added. I may have some labels to add to plants so visitors can tell what they are. The soil in one patch needs improvement. The cornfield plants need thinning out. If time, we can clear some of the old garden to the south of the herbaceous border. (We should already have cut back the rose bushes.) There is also strimming and tidying to do in the meadow area ready to plant some perennial wildflower plugs for next year.

NEW PLANTING ON THE HA-HA
On Friday, 12th June, Jamie McKenzie trimmed back Ivy overhanging the ha-ha garden in Eastfield Park ready for new planting by Vic and Janette Smith on Saturday, 13th June. Six Verbascum ('Dark Eyes') plugs were planted along the back of the garden and six Helianthemum (Rock Rose) plants in the middle and front of the garden ('Ben Fhada' immediately behind the wall to cascade over it, and 'Ben More' and 'The Bride' towards the middle.) This planting compliments the Helianthemum 'Ben Hope', Erigeron karvinskianus (Mexican Fleabane), Sedum takesimense Atlantis, and Sedum (probably S. spurium) left over from previous plantings. Some of the old planting was removed as it did not really suit the location. The plants were funded from part of a grant from NTC ( ). and it is hoped the new planting will contribute towards a beautiful and environmentally sensitive Northampton( ).

Today, 27th May 2026, Vic Smith and Jamie McKenzie, helped by Jamie's son, Henry, dug up daffodil bubs from the Jubilee Meadow in Eastfield Park. The bulbs are not being removed from the park and will be planted near the lake in the autumn. They were all garden daffodils planted some years ago and we want the meadow to be a site for native species. We did not remove any Lent Lilies (Narcissus pseudonarcissus), also known as wild daffodils. These are delicate, pale-yellow flowers, native to the UK. There are some of these in the meadow and we intend to plant more.

This work only took a little over half an hour, so we took a good look at other parts of the park. It was great to see that work has started on Mallard Walk close to the lake This part of the path was never built to the same standard as the path leading to or from the lake and this is now being rectified.

It was also good to see plants in the Eleonor House Insect-friendly Herbaceous Border in flower. Very few of the tree whips planted five years ago (same time as the garden daffodil bulbs) have survived but those that have endured are doing well.

Beware of thieves trying to steal vehicles in broad daylight! I have received a report of a person, with one other, attempting to steal a Vespa Scooter on Saturday afternoon in Churchill Avenue. I am not publishing it here but I have received a good photo.
