Sharing Leslie’s Story – Bowel Cancer, Recovery & Finding Life Again

When Leslie was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer in 2017, it came completely out of the blue.

After years of being told nothing was wrong, what started as stomach pain led to emergency surgery, a two and a half week hospital stay, intensive care, chemotherapy and a recovery journey that lasted far longer than anyone expected.

In this episode of See Through the Big C, Leslie shares:

The shock of being diagnosed with cancer during an emergency hospital admission

Living alone while navigating treatment and recovery

The long-term impact of chemotherapy and fatigue

The importance of family, friends and community support

Learning to live with uncertainty and fear of recurrence

Reaching almost 10 years since diagnosis and finding hope in life beyond cancer

One of the most powerful messages from Leslie's story is that recovery isn't always about returning to who you were before cancer but it's about finding a way forward and embracing the life that's still waiting for you.

"Life goes on, and you can go along with it. It may seem like the end of the world at the time, but once you hop off that rollercoaster, there's no going back."

⚽ Just 3 weeks to go until Silverstone Soccer 2026! ⚽

We're excited to be the chosen charity for this year's Silverstone Leasing Silverstone Soccer, a five-a-side charity tournament taking place at Daventry Town Football Club on Sunday 28 June 2026.

Twelve teams will be battling it out for the prestigious 2026 Silverstone Trophy, all featured in the picture below. A huge thank you to everyone taking part and supporting the event!

Team Lewis Abseil Day to mark our 10th Birthday Year!

The weather didn't stop the abseil going ahead, it was taken inside the tower!

418 ft still achieved, including the opportunity to abseil facing forward.

Huge thank you to the abseil team today who for the last 6 months have been raising awareness and funds to help adult cancer patients in hospital via our charity.

Huge thank you to the Natwest Northampton Team for supporting our work at The Lewis Foundation.

Volunteering their time to prepare and package our gift packs that will be used by adult cancer patients within the hospital setting.

Today’s gift packs will be making their way to hospitals in Nottingham, Northampton, Milton Keynes and Luton & Dunstable Hospital.

Last week Lee and Lorraine appeared on our local hospital radio, which is broadcast to patients who are in Northampton General Hospital direct to their bedside. It was great to join Gary Liburd and Lee Crowhurst to talk all things The Lewis Foundation on their two hour evening show.

From talking about why The Lewis Foundation started, why we continue to help others diagnosed with cancer in hospital over 10 years later and all the exciting projects to look beyond the gift packs that will be happening in the hospital setting.

It was a great conversation, mixed in with our choices of music, quizzes and even some blind food tasting.

It was great to connect with people that we directly support on a daily basis within the hospital setting.

Thank you to Gary and Lee for spreading awareness of our work. We look forward to coming back ❤️🙌🏾🔥

“Thank you so much for the gift pack, letter, pen and word search book. My Mum is undergoing treatment for cancer and has to travel a long way everyday for treatment. She absolutely loved the large print word search & beautiful letter.

Here she is looking for her first word! It has brightened up her whole week! Thank you.”

Messages like this is exactly why we do the work we do The Lewis Foundation to bring comfort and happiness to not only cancer patients but their loved ones too.

Out supporting 2 of our Lewis Foundation runners taking part in the Northampton 5k and 10k this morning.

Jason was running 5k in memory of his dad today and Sharon was running 10k in support of a friend who has cancer. Both wanted to take part to help others diagnosed with cancer via The Lewis Foundation. Loved cheering and part running with them today.

They smashed it 🔥 thank you both for your support and for making a difference ❤️
