🎢 Morris Dancers β€” Great Langton Village Fete

We’re delighted to welcome the Richmond on Swale Morris Dancers back to the Great Langton Village Fete this year.

Having loved their performance last year, we’re hoping you’ll join us to see them perform several sets across the afternoon.

The origins of Morris dancing stretch back to medieval England, where it began as a courtly entertainment before settling into village squares and country greens.

Come to the Great Langton Village Fete to see a tradition that has lived through nearly six hundred years of English summers, brought to our small corner of North Yorkshire for the afternoon.

A huge thank you to the team at for supporting Great Langton Village Fete this year.

They have very kindly displayed our posters in multiple spots around the shop, beautifully arranged and displayed across the store.

On top of that, Barkers have also generously offered to sponsor one of our raffle prizes on the day. We're truly grateful, and we'll be sharing more details about all of our raffle prizes soon.

Next time you're in Barkers, do you think you can spot all of our posters on display in the store?

πŸ• Dog Show β€” Great Langton Village Fete

Of course your dog is one of the finest in North Yorkshire. On the 18th of July, the Great Langton Village Fete is giving you the chance to prove it at our Dog Show. Pedigree or rescue, working dog or sofa specialist: this is your chance to bring home a rosette.

Six categories on offer, from Most Prestigious Pup to Best Veteran, Show Queen and King, Best Trick (sausage-catching counts), and the ever-popular Best 6 Legs. With huge thanks to Millbry Hill Country Store, who have sponsored all six categories.

Entry is Β£2 per dog, with all proceeds going towards the restoration of St Wilfrid's Church. Sign up via our form - no obligation, payment taken on the day in cash or card. You're welcome to enter the same dog in more than one category, and to sign up more than one dog.

Coming just to watch? Well-behaved dogs on leads are always welcome at the fete.

🍰 Calling all bakers

Every good village fete runs on cake, and ours is no exception.

We’re looking for volunteers from across the village (and beyond) to bake something lovely for the day. Victoria sponges, lemon drizzles, brownies, flapjacks, scones, traybakes, showstoppers, family recipes passed down through the generations β€” whatever you love to make, we’d love to have on the table.

If you, or someone you know, fancies firing up the oven for a good cause, please send us a message. Every slice sold goes towards the restoration of St Wilfrid’s Church.

🚘 Classic Vehicle Show at the Great Langton Village Fete

Calling all owners of classic vehicles.
Polish the bonnet, check the oil, dust off the driving gloves β€” on the 18th of July, the Great Langton Village Fete becomes a showground, and we'd love you to bring yours along.
Cars, motorbikes, tractors, mopeds, vans, military vehicles, oddities, one-offs. If it's classic, it's welcome. The more variety on the day, the better the display.

Judging this year is in the hands of Nigel Corner, High Sherrif of North Yorkshire, with a prize for the vehicle the judge would most like to take home. Further prizes to be announced closer to the day.

Entry is Β£10 per vehicle, with all proceeds going towards the restoration of St Wilfrid's Church.

Sign up your vehicle via the link below β€” and if you're bringing more than one, please pop in a separate entry for each.
Coming along to admire rather than exhibit? Even better. Bring the family, and come and spend the afternoon with us.

Follow us on Instagram and Facebook to stay tuned for more information to follow about all the attractions at the Fete.

If you walk east from Great Langton along the bank of the river Swale, you'll come to a grass track leading off into the meadows. Follow it, and you'll find St Wilfrid's church: a small medieval church standing entirely on its own, with the river running below and not a house in sight.

The nave was built around 1140, and the Norman doorway you pass through today is the same one used by parishioners in the reign of King Stephen.
On the north wall there is a second Norman archway, now blocked up. It was known as the Devil's Door, opened during baptisms in the old belief that the devil would flee northwards out of the child.

The Domesday Book of 1086 records the parish of Langton as having been laid waste, most likely by the Danes. A village once stood nearby; tradition holds it was abandoned after the Black Death in the fourteenth century, leaving the church to serve Great Langton and Little Langton from the exact midpoint between them.

Mother Shipton, the fifteenth-century prophetess of Knaresborough, is said to have foretold that Langton church would sink into the ground and be carried off by the river, and that when it does, it will mark the end of the world.

It has stood here for nearly nine hundred years, but now she needs our care.

Every penny raised at the Great Langton Village Fete goes towards the restoration of St Wilfrid's church.

Join us at Great Langton Village Fete on Saturday the 18th of July 2-6pm at Langton Farm.
