The Aerodrome was established in the summer of 1916 as a Royal Flying Corp aerodrome North Weald was a frontline Sector Station for 11 Group during the Battle of Britain before hosting jets from the late Forties until the mid Sixties. It remained MOD property until being sold to Epping Forest District Council in the early Eighties. In recent years the airfield has been targeted from many angles as a suitable location for large scale residential development, which, if realised, could ultimately lead to the closure and loss of this important and popular aviation and leisure facility and historic site for future generations

North Weald, 1942.

Inside the dispersal hut of No. 331 Squadron RAF, where sorties were briefed, gear was checked, and the waiting happened.

This photograph is believed to show several well-known Norwegian pilots gathered on the left side of the room, figures associated with 331 Squadron in this period — including men such as Tarald Weisteen, Stein Sem, and Rolf Arne Berg. If that identification is correct, the image must date from before Sem was killed in action.

Moments like this rarely look dramatic. Yet for several of the men in this room, the future was already painfully short.
