Its that time again!

Every year our fearless Jarl, Svein 'Melrakki' Haraldson, leads an expedition to the Karmoy Viking Festival in Avaldsnes, Norway.

"Vikings from many countries come and set up their tents between the reconstructed buildings.

In this way, we want to continue the traditions from the time of the Norse Sagas, when the royal estate at Avaldsnes was a meeting place for people from many countries, and where our own traditions met cultural impulses from abroad.

You will meet craftsmen, traders and sailors, people who demonstrate weapons, storytellers, jugglers, musicians – and new friends.

The purpose of the event is to make the history of the Viking Age come alive in a child-and family-friendly manner."

Here fishy, fishy, fishy! Fishing was a very important part of early medieval life, as fish and various seafood made up a large part of the diet of the period. Fishing villages sprang up near the coast seeking catches of cod, bream and mackerel, whereas eels and fresh water fish such as trout and perch were sought inland.

Many different methods were used, including, hand lines, nets, woven traps and spears. Large semi permanent fence structures have even been found in places like Colchester and along the Thanes, likely huge traps used by local communities.

With so many different ways to demonstrate fishing and associated skills, we are hooked!

We know this tool as a niddy-noddy, skein winder, yarn winder and many many other names. It was used for thousands of years to wind wool into neat skeins particularly suited for dyeing among other things. Two excellent examples were even found in the Oseberg ship burial in Norway! Clearly a vital early-medieval tool. Check out this article by Anne Stein Ingstad for further information about the fascinating textile finds of the Oseberg burial: http://www.forest.gen.nz/Medieval/articles/Oseberg/textiles/TEXTILE.HTM

Alwin seems to think the posts that get most views have his gorgeous face in them. What do you guys think?

Whether he is fishing, carving, helping the blacksmith or yelling obscenities at geese, Alwin is always a staple of any Northumbria camp.
