Commemorating 110 years since the Battle of the Somme.

Yesterday afternoon, cadets from our Unit took part in the District’s remembrance parade through Belfast, concluding with a service at St Anne’s Cathedral to mark the 110th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

The ceremony centred on eight volumes representing the 49,000 Irishmen who fell during the Great War. One name from each book was read aloud, a symbolic act acknowledging the scale of their sacrifice.

Our cadets carried these volumes with dignity alongside the Army Cadets, in the presence of His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant, the Deputy First Minister, and the Lord Mayor of Belfast.

We extend our sincere thanks to every cadet and CFAV who supported this important act of remembrance.

Thank You to Our Volunteers

As Volunteer Week comes to an end, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to every single volunteer who supports Newtownards Sea Cadets. The week may finish, but the volunteering journey doesn’t, your commitment, enthusiasm, and dedication continue every day of the year.

Whether you’re a uniformed volunteer, a Civilian Instructor, or part of our Unit Management Team, your time and effort make an incredible difference. Today, tomorrow, and onwards, we remain grateful for everything you do to give young people a great experience through nautical fun and adventure.

And if you’ve ever thought about getting involved, there’s a place for you here. Volunteering with Sea Cadets gives young people a head start in life, all it takes is a message to find out more.

This Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating PO Somerville — someone who has grown through every stage of Sea Cadets. From joining as a young cadet, to working his way up through the ranks, he now serves as both a drill instructor and a powerboat instructor, sharing the skills and standards that shaped his own journey.

His dedication, experience, and commitment to giving young people the same opportunities he once had make a real impact on our unit. Thank you, PO Somerville, for everything you bring to Newtownards Sea Cadets.

This Volunteer Week, we’re shining a light on someone who knows Sea Cadets from both sides of the uniform. PO McCullough first joined as a young cadet, and today she brings that same passion and experience back to the unit as a dedicated volunteer.

Her journey shows exactly what Sea Cadets can inspire confidence, skills, and a lifelong connection to service. We’re proud to have her on the team, and grateful for everything she gives to our cadets.

Saturday 2nd May saw Cadets and Adult Volunteers from across Northern Ireland District come together for what can only be described as a standout evening for Northern Ireland Sea Cadets. HMS HIBERNIA hosted Cadets, Volunteers, and distinguished guests as we gathered to celebrate the promotion and appointment of Commander MacLennan as Senior Staff Officer Northern Area.

As a unit, we were delighted to be part of the evening and to stand alongside other units in recognising such an important milestone. Events like this highlight the strength of our Sea Cadet community, the dedication of our volunteers, and the commitment shown by our cadets week after week.

Our cadets represented Newtownards with pride, professionalism, and enthusiasm throughout the evening. They are a credit to themselves, their families, and the unit.
