Last week, the Communities Minister, Gordon Lyons MLA, announced an important and very welcome change for the Armed Forces community in Northern Ireland.

The War Pension will now be disregarded in the income assessment for the Affordable Warmth Scheme. This amendment will make the scheme more flexible and, crucially, more accessible for veterans who may previously have fallen just outside the qualifying criteria.

This decision reflects the Department for Communities’ ongoing commitment to uphold the Armed Forces Covenant — ensuring that no member of the Armed Forces community, whether serving or veteran, is disadvantaged in accessing public services.

For many of our most vulnerable veterans, a significant number of whom are older and living on fixed incomes, this change will make a real and practical difference. At a time when so many households are facing pressure from rising energy costs, it will help ensure that those who have given so much are better supported to live in warm, safe homes.

This is a positive and compassionate step, and one that recognises both service and need in a meaningful way.

📣𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗜𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀

We would like to share an opportunity for female veterans and female family members connected to service to take part in an important discussion on women’s representation within the new museum exhibition, 𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗢𝗟𝗗 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗔𝗿𝗺𝘆, at the Northern Ireland Military Museum.

If you served, supported someone who served, or worked within the MOD, this is your chance to shape how women’s stories are reflected in this new space.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲:
🟢 A woman who served in any of the three Services at any time in the UK Armed Forces
🟢 A female family member of someone who served including siblings, parents, grandparents, children or grandchildren
🟢 A former MOD civil servant

The workshops are delivered in partnership with 𝗗𝗿 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗵 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁 from The Centre for Military Women’s Research.

Sessions will use archive artefacts to open the floor to discussions and give you the opportunity to contribute ideas for future museum displays and programming.

You will also have the chance to review early museum designs and share what you would like to see represented.

If you would like to take part, please email Annie at 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁@𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗵𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗱.𝗰𝗼𝗺 and confirm which session suits you:

📅 Friday 6 March

Many thanks to Pamela at Gifts & Giggles Galore 70-72 Main Street, who is running a raffle. All funds raised are being donated to Beyond the Battlefield in aid of homeless veterans.

Without the dedicated support of people like Pam throughout the year and our funders we would not be able to support veterans and their families when they need it the most.

If you're passing by her shop, call in, get yourself a raffle ticket, get a gift for yourself or someone else, have a chat with Pam and have a giggle, it's all in a good cause!
