Weekly Member Spotlight -Alchemy Film & Arts 'In a land of Milk Snatchers'
Alchemy Film and Arts are known for their creative ability to draw people into the wonderful world of film in a unique and bewildering way, bringing the industry alive for a month in Hawick through their festival of experimental film and moving image which largely takes parts at their base ‘The Heart of Hawick’. This festival has seen issues raised, communities lifted, techniques explored, skills shared and creative learning taking place with experienced and non-experienced film makers. They strive to constantly learn and make the film and arts industry as inclusive as possible.
In a Land of Milk Snatchers’ is their newest project delivered with Scottish Borders communities, regional and national partners and artists parents. ‘In a land of Milk Snatchers’ is primarily about inclusion in the creative arts and bringing like-minded people together who have caring responsibilities. There are currently 4 groups as part of this over-charging project: Bring your own Baby Film Screening, Scene Setters Playgroup and Toys are Us, art sessions for parents and grandparents and Fancy Knitting at Hawick Library.
‘Bring your own baby’ starts on the 21st of October which has 4 screenings across four weeks at the Pavillion in Galashiels, Screen 2. The sessions have been planned so that all needs are met, there is space for buggies and toilets, and baby changing are all on the same level, the most important part is, a cuppa and biscuit are included for the reduced price of £6.50! ‘Bring your own Baby’ invites parents to bring their baby up to twelve months old to film-screenings for grown-ups in a relaxed setting with reduced sounds, increased lightening and noise and movement welcome.
Scene Setters is a Playgroup for children and their grown-ups to create and connect at The Great Tapestry of Scotland in Galashiels. Scene Setters invites you to step inside an inclusive hands-on environment where new worlds can be made from a range of materials, allowing parents and carers to connect with their wee ones and with each other. Sessions will start from Thursday the 22nd October for 6 weeks. Each session is £5 or can be booked as a block for £25.
Toys Are Us started on the 21st September at Burnfoot Community Hub, these free art sessions are for parents and grandparents to have focused creative time without their children. The group will run for 6 weeks with a break halfway, throughout the parents will be making, crafting, sculpting and using everyday objects and transforming them into new things that they can use.
The Alchemy Film and Arts Team describe themselves as ‘warm, funny, open and caring’ and we at YouthBorders are excited to see where they go from here with their commitment to families, young people, parents and the community.
