Wargrave Big Local

Wargrave Big Local Wargrave Big Local was a 10-year project (2015-25), funded by £1 million from the National Lottery. Our vision is simple and direct.

Residents took the lead and decided how to spend the money to make our area a better place to live. A Partnership Board will guide how
the money is spent by listening to your
views, listening to local residents and
using information about the area. We will run projects ourselves and
work with other organisations to make
sure the money goes as far as possible. We
wanted something that would make a

long term difference to the people of
Wargrave and future generations. We
wanted to do something over the years
which would change the way people
thought about themselves.

As the very last day of the project approaches, it's difficult to put 10years of community action into a simple post...but here's a few more highlights!

✨We funded renovations to NLW Library garden - making it a friendly and welcoming space for all.

✨Provided breakfast packs, school uniform and equipment to support local families.

✨Gave a grant to help start Wargrave Choir - now with over 70 members!

✨Funded bins for the Wargrave area to keep it clean and tidy and showing pride in our community.

✨Lobbied the Council to install a crossing on Wargrave Road.

✨Held numerous family events, such as Breakfast with Santa. 🎅

✨Helped to start a men's group and sewing group (both now running independently).

Another project we're really proud to have supported is the dry river bed and letters to heaven postbox in Newton Cemetery.

Local residents felt there wasn't an appropriate place to remember loved ones and the idea of a dry river bed area of remembrance was born. ❤️

Through Wargrave Big Local support the work was completed and we helped to form a Friends of Newton Cemetery Group.

If you're interested in joining the group please email [email protected]

Along the way we've had some fun....🎉

🚌In the last 18 months we have organised 10 coach trips, with over 800 places, making days out possible for families and people who may otherwise stay at home.

🎪We held a community fun day in August, giving residents and families a free day packed with activities.

🧩In the school holidays all of our Breakfast pack families received games and crafts to keep the kids busy and creative.

🎨Wellbeing sessions offered art, crafts, mindfulness and activities and friendships, all contributing to supporting mental health.

Thanks to everyone who came along and took part. 😘

The next in our series of Legacy projects is...Newton Community Centre. 🥰

Over the years we have had a huge amount of support from and we felt that we wanted to help support the Centre in return. Through our Big Local funding this year we have helped to:

✨Renovate the community garden - working with the team at NCC, Groundwork GM and Wargrave Big Local it has been improved - making it more accessible, able to be used all year around and given a refresh for the future.

✨Funded staff roles to support the Centre to become stronger, more adaptable, sustainable and open more hours to the community.

✨Given grants to support the Summer play scheme and replace equipment.

We really are lucky to have such a fabulous facility right in the heart of Wargrave and hope that they go from success to success.

The first of our legacy project posts is Red Brow Wood....🌳

Red Brow Wood is an area of ancient woodland just off Bradlegh Road/ Catherine Way and was identified as an area that would benefit from some maintenance to clear a woodland walk.
During the summer and with the support of and Groundwork Cheshire, Lancashire, Merseyside. and Wargrave volunteers the woodland has been tidied up, non-native species removed, the brook cleared, the sandstone quarry face revealed and the pathway replaced.

Nest steps are to install interpretation boards and sign posts and this will be done in the New Year.

We felt this project enhanced our green spaces, supported restoration of Sankey Canal and our local heritage for many years to come.

As we come to the end of the Big Local project we'd love to share our Legacy Video - which highlights just a few of the projects we've completed over the last 10 years.

It's a slightly longer watch than some social media video's...but we think it's worth it! ❤️

Thanks to everyone who was involved and Welton Media for producing the video. 🙏
