What a fantastic morning with Primary 5/6 at Logan Primary School for their Sundew Badge session! We kicked things off by diving into the incredible wildlife we’re lucky to have here in the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere celebrating just how special our local landscape really is.

The creativity then flowed as the class worked together to build a vibrant collage of our region, complete with rolling hills, wind turbines, woodlands and more. That masterpiece became the perfect springboard for a lively land-use debate. Pupils took on the roles of farmers, conservationists, community members, wind farm representatives and foresters, each pitching passionately to the “council” about why they deserved the land. The arguments were thoughtful, persuasive and impressively well balanced. It tied in perfectly to their current school topic which is farming.

We wrapped up by planting broad beans for the class to care for, a small but meaningful step towards understanding sustainability and the power of growing our own food. A morning full of creativity, big thinking and hands-on action. Well done P5/6! I'll be back to check on the broad beans and to do some more fun activities with them in a few weeks time.

One week tomorrow Kilsture Forest Community Group will be running a session about getting to know the forest. Come along and spend some time in one of the most interesting woods in Dumfries and Galloway.

https://fienta.com/future-kilsture-forest-event

I'll be running a session for children aged 5-12 that day, Forest School style from 10-1, where we will be doing our own survey of the woods, and lots of fun games too.

Book onto either or both events via the link above.

Today Dumfries & Galloway Woodlands had the most beautiful day up Wardlaw Hill with The Depot supporting asylum seekers and refugees. We appreciated the beautiful views of the Solway and shared songs from our homelands. It was all about bushcraft as we talked about responsibly finding natural materials such as bulrush and king alfreds cakes to help you start fires in a survival situation. Everyone got a shot of learning the ropes on how to tie basic bushcraft knots to build a good shelter. We explored the wood and learned a tree species or two and then feasted on bannock and locally sourced veg. It's safe to say everyone had a good time! Thanks to Caerlaverock Estate for hosting.

Although it's unsafe to be in the woods tomorrow, instead you could go along to this amazing event on the beach!

We are back with our Beach Art event for 2025 - and this year there is even more to do… and it’s held in Summer rather than Autumn, so fingers crossed for good weather!

Everyone welcome - let’s celebrate and enjoy the natural world around us by making temporary yet meaningful artistic expressions on the beach, carefully using what is there - shells, drift wood, pebbles, seaweed… even beach litter!

What will you create… A sea monster? A mermaid? Or something completely random and abstract. Anything is possible.

Come along by yourself or work together as a family or group of friends and see what you can make.

This year we are holding our event after the Green Britain Foundation Beach Clean - you can join in with that at 1:30pm and help make a difference with them…. and then after that with us, from 3:30pm, create your MAC-CAN beach art!

At the end of the activity we will have all the creations on show; during their creation we will be taking photos and hopefully they will be captured from above using a drone also. We will have two local ladies who are well-known and passionate about the care of the oceans and seashore judging the creations, with the chosen winners being gifted an environmentally-themed gift.

If any items of beach art you have made has been made using beach litter, please dismantle the piece and collect this up at the end to dispose of it responsibly. Anything else which is natural and has come from the beach can be left for the beach.

Afterwards everyone is welcome to come back to the nearby community space on Main Street ‘Number 12’ from 5:30pm for refreshments (pay as you feel donations welcome) and an informative climate conversation, about Fish Net Zero.

We now have a link to book your spot at the Climate Conversation part of our Beach Art event this year

⭐️⭐️ please book your place for this part so we know roughly how many chairs we need and about the refreshments, thank you: https://buytickets.at/macharsandcreevalleyclimateactionnetwork/1793584

It’s still free to attend 💚 and did you know that we are kicking off with this first community creativity event this year during National Marine Week to further celebrate the specialness of our seas! 💙💚🧡

Photographs of each beach art creation will be displayed early next year at our second event Create for Climate Art Exhibition, so please pop back for that if you can to be reminded of what you made - or for those that didn’t make it along, come and see what folks did!

CANCELLED - Sensory Journey Sessions at Kilsture Forest on Tuesday the 5th.

Unfortunately due to the weather forecast update we will have to cancel the Sensory Journey sessions at Kilsture Forest tomorrow. The wind gusts are predicted to be 40mph during the session which makes it unsafe to be in the woodland. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and hope to see you some time in the future, when the sun shines and the winds are low. If you are aware of anyone else that has signed up to this session could you please pass on the message. An update should be in your inbox.
