A huge thank you to everyone who attended the Workplace Health team's Primary Care MSK and Mental Health event last week đź’™

We had a range of guest speakers at the event, all who shared insightful advice and information on the importance of looking after ourselves at work.

We also had free massages, interactive sessions including reaction games, Jenga and even took part in a Pilates session delivered by Charlotte Wood Pilates.

Thank you to all of our guest speakers - your insights were truly appreciated.

Yesterday, Options marked Learning Disability Awareness Week, with this year’s powerful theme - 'Do you see me?' 💜

As part of this, Options invited people to join them for a coffee and cookie afternoon, a relaxed space to chat, connect, and get to know each other better. It was all about building understanding, strengthening relationships, and reminding each other that 'you can see us' and 'we can see you.'

Thank you to everyone who joined Options and took the time to be part of such a meaningful conversation. đź’™

Participants in a community cooking programme delivered by health and wellbeing charity Pioneering Care Partnership (P*P) are continuing their cooking journeys at home after being gifted their own cooking equipment on completion of the course.

Thanks to funding from the Point North Community Grant Fund, 14 local people took part in a series of accredited four-week cooking courses delivered in partnership with Bishop Auckland College . The programme helped participants develop practical cooking skills, learn how to prepare healthy, affordable meals and build confidence in the kitchen.

To help them put their new skills into practice, each participant received a free electric cooking pan and a kitchen starter kit, complete with utensils and an apron.

The courses were designed to support people facing a range of challenges, including social isolation, loneliness, food poverty and rising household costs. Alongside learning new recipes and cooking techniques, participants had the opportunity to meet new people, share experiences and build lasting connections in a welcoming environment.

The benefits of hydrotherapy for musculoskeletal injuries. 🌊

Hydrotherapy offers a supportive and effective way to aid recovery, using the unique properties of water to make movement easier, safer, and more comfortable.

Exercising in warm water allows the body to move more freely, as buoyancy reduces the pressure placed on joints, muscles, and bones. This makes hydrotherapy particularly beneficial for those experiencing pain, stiffness, or limited mobility, as it enables gentle movement that might be difficult on land.

Hydrotherapy can help to:
- Reduce pain and muscle tension through the warmth of the water
- Improve joint mobility and flexibility
- Increase muscle strength using the water’s natural resistance
- Support low-impact rehabilitation following injury or surgery
- Build confidence in movement in a safe and controlled environment

The resistance of the water also plays a key role in rehabilitation, allowing individuals to strengthen muscles without placing excessive strain on the body. This makes hydrotherapy an ideal option for people at different stages of recovery.

Beyond the physical benefits, hydrotherapy can also have a positive impact on wellbeing. The calming effects of warm water and gentle exercise can help reduce stress and improve overall mood, supporting both physical and mental recovery.
Whether you’re recovering from injury or managing a long-term condition, hydrotherapy can be a valuable step towards improved movement, strength, and quality of life.

Earlier this month, our Grow As Friends co-production lived experience group in Middlesbrough came together to create something powerful for Learning Disability Week. đź’ś

With creativity, laughter (and our very own “number one spell checker” keeping us on track!), the group designed brilliant posters exploring the theme “Do You See Me?”

The message was clear; people with a learning disability want to be seen, heard, and valued in their communities.

From bold digital designs to colourful hand-drawn posters, every piece reflects the group’s passion and determination to make a difference.

To round up Carer's Week, Ruth, who attends our 'Care for Carers' lived experience group, has shared her story as an unpaid carer. đź’ś

Ruth lives with her husband, her daughter, and her adult son. Her son’s fiancée doesn’t live with them full time but stays for a few days every couple of weeks. Despite not always being there, Ruth sees her as part of the family, saying, “we are all a team and we all care for each other.”

Her daughter’s fiancé also stays from time to time. He supports both Ruth’s daughter and the wider family when needed, often helping with technical issues, as Ruth puts it, “he is our family techy.” The whole family spend time together and even go on holidays as a group, reinforcing their strong bond.

With several members of the family having support needs, caring is part of everyday life in their home. Ruth describes it as a shared effort, where everyone steps in to support one another in different ways.

But she is honest about how it really feels: “It’s exhausting. It’s hard work, and you never know what’s going to happen next.”

For Ruth, caring isn’t something she chose as a role it’s simply part of her life. She believes many people feel the same and don’t always recognise themselves as carers.

She explains: “People just get on with it, but you need to know when you need help. If you don’t get a break, you’ll get to a point where you can’t do it anymore.”

The family also found the move from children’s to adult services difficult. Sudden changes, new systems, and less joined-up support meant they had to adapt quickly, adding extra pressure.

What matters to Ruth:

- Keeping her family together
- Knowing everyone is safe and supported
- Having a bit of time to herself

Ruth is also part of the Middlesbrough Care for Carers Group, a co-production group working with people with lived experience, the Pioneering Care Partnership (P*P), and Middlesbrough Adult Social Care. Together, they are helping to improve services by sharing real experiences and shaping changes that matter.

Even though it can be overwhelming, Ruth and her family continue to support each other every day, because, as she says, “we are all a team.”
