STOVER CANAL - UPDATE

It's been six weeks since the destruction brought by Storm Bert, in that time, the water level has dropped but not by as much as we would have liked. As you can see from the photos of the cycle path, the one on the left was taken a couple of days ago, the one on the right the Monday after the storm.

A multi-agency meeting organised by Silbelco was held last month to discuss possible ways forward. Unfortunately Network Rail did not attend but apparently have been seen in the area surveying the site. Silbelco are working with the Environment Agency on a plan to pump the water from the quarry. It is estimated it will take 3-6 months (further storms permitting) as a minimum to reduce the level of the water far enough so the breech to the quarry wall can be revealed, allowing work to start with the rebuilding of the quarry wall.

Devon County Council's Public Rights of Way team are trying to find a temporary bridge to reconnect the shared cycle path. They have contacted the local military to see if they can help, with no luck at this time. If anyone has contacts within any branch of the services that might be able to help, please let us know and we will pass on any details.

As for the canal, we will have to wait for the water level to recede low enough before we can start planning any works. We will continue to maintain the canal and it's paths to the north of Exeter road, but for the foreseeable future the canal towpath and DCC’s shared path between Newton Abbot and Exeter road will remain closed.

Finally, please support Dan at MT Tums on Exeter road at this difficult time, with the two mains paths accessing his café from Newton Abbot closed.
