What better way to celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday than by giving something back to the natural world? From small swaps to simple projects, these ideas can help turn your garden into a haven for wildlife, one step at a time…

🌳 Plant a tree or shrub – native choices such as hawthorn, rowan, crab apple, hazel, and guelder rose provide food and shelter for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife.

🌸 Grow pollinator-friendly flowers – choose single, open blooms to support bees, butterflies and hoverflies across the seasons.

♻️ Make a compost heap – recycle garden waste, enrich your soil and create habitat.

🌼 Leave seedheads and ‘weeds’ – let plants like dandelions and clover flower and set seed for pollinators and birds.

💧 Provide water for wildlife – keep bird baths clean and topped up, and consider adding a pond: even a pot can provide a habitat.

🌱 Reduce lawn area – swap grass for wildflower meadows, mixed planting or veg beds to boost biodiversity.
