20th June 2026 marks an important date for Newquay, the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the first passenger train. This would lead to a vast increase in tourism and the construction of Newquay's first real hotel beyond coaching inns or pubs with accommodation. The Great Western Hotel was opened in 1879 taking its name from the company which would run the line for many decades.
