Herbie is a young lad who has had a very traumatic and troubled past and his emotional scars run deep. In his original home, Herbie was chased, dragged, hit with a broom, pinned down, cornered by brooms and unfortunately, he learned that snapping was the way to keep himself safe. Our behaviourist has been working with him since he came into our care and is helping to build his confidence around people.
We have to be very careful about the new home we choose for this little guy as he needs very special humans who can understand his needs and provide a home with plenty of space where he can quietly retreat when he needs to.
๐ถ Herbie is really good on the lead, he has great recall, he enjoys the company of other dogs to play with although he can get a bit nervous of bigger dogs approaching him quickly when he is on his lead but this is something we can work on.
๐ He is a very good boy at the groomers and at the vets. We have muzzle trained him just in case he becomes worried there and he happily accepts wearing it while being examined.
โพ Herbie loves learning tricks and training and loves playing ball and retrieving.
๐พ He is house trained and good being left alone for short periods and is crate trained.
The negative aspects of his behaviour are all linked to his past treatment and he needs careful handling at certain times
After 6pm, Herbie takes himself off to rest and doesnโt want any interaction. He needs his own space and to be left alone. If disturbed from rest, he can startle and growl, but this is much less now that he is gaining trust in people. If someone leans over him or makes him feel intimidated, he shows clear body language that he isnโt happy and can snap.
Although he loves to play with his doggy pals out on walks, he will guard food and people from other dogs in his home so no dogs, cats or children can live with Herbie. He feels more comfortable with gentle calm men and women. Loud or bigger men he is sadly frightened of.

Living with a dog like Herbie may not be easy or straightforward but we are sure the right person who will follow our lead in helping Herbie to continue his recovery is out there. Our behaviourist will continue to work with Herbie for as long as is needed.
Humans did this to Herbie and we will not give up on him and we hope that special someone feels the same as we do.
If you have the right environment and want to give this young boy his second chance, please complete the application below:
