As Nipper training was coming to an end and our adults were catching the last few waves of their session, our patrol volunteers spotted a potential incident unfolding with a group of 8 young people about to get drawn into the rip current at the south end of the beach. Quick intervention by our volunteers prevented any further action needed and the group were grateful for the some well received water safety advice.
☀️ Swim between the red & yellow flags during lifeguard hours. Rip currents can be hard to spot and easy to get caught in.
☀️Stay within your depth, conditions can change quickly.
☀️ Check the conditions; tides, surf, currents, weather and swim to your ability.
☀️Carry a means of calling for help like a whistle or a mobile phone in a waterproof pouch.
☀️ Wear bright colours and take something that floats like a tow-float. A wetsuit helps with buoyancy.
☀️If you get into difficulty, Float To Live (Float on your back with your ears submerged using your hands and feet to keep, try to keep calm and breathe normally).
☀️ If you see someone in difficulty call 999 Coastguard
