Newport Panto Society Soars with Hilarious “Jack and the Beanstalk”
Last night, the Dolman Theatre came alive with the vibrant energy of Newport Panto Society’s production of “Jack and the Beanstalk.” From the moment the curtain rose, it was clear that the audience was in for a treat, with a performance brimming with traditional panto charm.
The production, directed with a sure hand, delivered a faithful adaptation of the classic tale, complete with all the familiar elements: a hapless hero, a wicked villain, a dame with outlandish costumes, and, of course, a giant to boo. The cast clearly embraced the spirit of pantomime, delivering performances that were both polished and wonderfully over-the-top.
Leading the charge was Jack Trot, played with endearing naiveté and bravery. His chemistry with his best friend Daisy the Cow, brought to life through physical comedy. Dame Trot, portrayed with flamboyant flair and a mountain of sass, was an absolute showstopper, with every entrance met with laughter. Silly Billy, Jack’s daft but lovable brother, was a source of constant amusement, landing every gag with impeccable timing.
The villainous Fleshcreep was suitably sinister. His attempts to thwart our heroes were met with boos and hisses, exactly as they should be, whilst Princess Primrose, was a breath of fresh air, her portrayal radiating a sense of independence and spirit. King Crumble’s well-meaning but bumbling nature, was also a delight, embodying the delightful silliness of the production.
The ensemble cast deserves immense credit, contributing significantly to the energetic atmosphere, their performances a testament to the community spirit at the heart of the Newport Panto Society.
“Jack and the Beanstalk” is a must-see for families and panto lovers.
