A great story from the HHI visit to Zambia last year ...

On the first morning of our 2025 visit to Monze, Zambia, Bumba Nsanya visited the HHZ compound asking for help. He had serious kidney problems and needed stoma and colostomy bags. Fortunately , the HHIUK visitors, Liz Jones and Jute Williams had brought with them three suitcases packed with unwanted, unused stoma bags no longer needed by UK patients, so Bumba's needs could be met. He was delighted! Stoma equipment is collected in the UK throughout the year, and during each annual visit to Monze, it is freely given to Monze Mission hospital to help patients such as Bumba. The good news is that since our visit, Bumba has undergone a surgical procedure at the hospital and is now completely whole again. He no longer needs colostomy bags, but he is really grateful for receiving them prior to his operation . Bumba and his mother visited HHZ to express their heartfelt thanks to HHIUK supporters who donated these precious resources.

If anyone would like to visit our work in Zambia or India, please let us know. It is great to see it first hand!

Thank you from the Dimuna boys.
The Dimuna family in Zambia have 9 children; sadly four of whom are visually impaired . Their living conditions were not good and the parents were struggling to care for all their needs. HHI have managed to provide funds for an extension to their home and some monthly food support. Now the blind boys have their own space and can sleep in comfort. A huge improvement all round. A big thank you to our supporters for making this possible.

Here at Health Help International we are always looking for innovative ways to improve the lives of the people that we help.
Thanal House is a home and refuge for destitute women who have been rescued from the streets. We have supported their work for many years.
The women help around the home, but there isn’t much for them to do in the evenings. A local choir had offered to come and give a monthly concert, but they had no-where for them to sit.
Our Scottish supporters provided £300 which was enough to buy 44 chairs. The concert went ahead – it was a great success, and a good time was had by all. An added bonus is that it raises the profile of the home in the area – we are hoping that this will help them to raise more money in India as a result. Thank you Strathaven!

Every month we send out money to India to help people buy medicines. Without our help they may well have to choose between those medicines and feeding themselves; without food they can do both. Some need regular help for long-term medicines; others need help just once. Some need both.

One person that we helped with a one-off payment recently, but who really needs regular support, is NIrmala. Our Indian partner gave her Rs.3,000 (£25) and reports:

Mrs. Nirmala is living in a small house. She is a poor .
Her husband was passed away some years ago. They are coolie people from very poor family. She haven’t children. After some years back she effected heart attack and some other different diseases also. She was treating for all diseases. But in the government hospital there is not all medicine stock. So mostly medicines she want to purchase from private medical shops. For that she was struggled. But she ask support from us, We supported a 3000 rupees in April. She is many thanks to supporters . she is not able to do any work. But very simple work a two or three hours helping neighbourhood house.
This money is using for the medicine purchase. She ask me for continuing this support? I said I don’t know sister.
She convey her heartily thanks to donor.

If you do not support us already, could you support someone like Nirmala? £10 or £15 a month makes a huge difference to someone like her. Our website www.hhi.org.uk/donate has a number of ways that you can help us.

Happy Valley, our special needs school in Kerala, India has operated out of rented buildings for a number of years. This has not been ideal - the buildings are not always the most suitable, leases are short, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find buildings large enough to accommodate the school as it grows.
Recently our Indian partners, The Banyan Tree, have been offered a large former school building to buy at a good price. This would entitle them to receive a Government grant, enabling the work to continue and to expand. The price is still daunting, but they are confident that they can raise a good part of the cost themselves if we provide the rest. Please pray for us as we consider this exciting new chapter in our work in India.

Exhildah Muvwanga made a special visit to the Health Help Zambia office in Monze to express her sincere appreciation for the help she is receiving towards her education. As a person with a physical disability, she attended Choongo all-inclusive school. Exhildah has difficulty walking.
Last year she did very well in her final exams at Choongo School which meant that she qualified for an 80% bursary to do a diploma teaching course at Rock View University, Lusaka. HHI, as part of its educational support programme for disabled individuals, is paying the remaining 20%. Exhildah is delighted and so are we. We are sure that in a few years’ time Exhiladah will be inspiring other young students to succeed.

Mr Hatwambo has sent a sincere message of thanks to all the HHI supporters and in particular to Sally for the fund-raising parachute jump she did to ensure that the Ntambo community have a new borehole. (John Mwansa, the HHZ worker, is translating).
Mr Hatwambo is the Headman for the Ntambo community, and he is the father of disabled Priscilla and the husband to a very poorly wife.
Having water has changed the lives of the Ntambo community for the better in so many ways. Maize and vegetables are growing, clothes are clean and there is plenty of water to drink.

Every month we send Rs.15,000 (about £120) to Pastor Wilson in India for him to use at his discretion for people with severe medical needs that they are unable to pay for themselves.

One such last month was Mrs. Sathi. She lives in a tiny house -just one small room and an even smaller kitchen, with a sheet asbestos roof – with her severely mentally disabled son Sreejith who is 27 years old. He cannot walk, only lie in bed. When his disability became apparent her husband left her. This is her only child. So she is desperately poor – sometimes people will give her a little food, sometimes she is able to do panchayath cleaning work (workfare), but the need to care for her son makes this very difficult, and often she goes hungry. Her son needs medicine; buying this is a huge struggle.

Wilson was able to give her Rs.4,000 (£32) to buy medicines for her son this month. We would like to be able to help her every month.

Nine year old Isaac , who attends Chongo Special school in Zambia was in desperate need for a new artificial limb. Having been born with a congenital condition he has had to learn to walk with an artificial limb. However, when the limb needs replacing and there is no money to buy one what happens? HHI step in and fund the costs which are high as the materials are not available in Zambia. Thanks to our partnership with a skilled craftsman in Holy Family, labour was free and support and training for Isaac in using the limb and caring for it will take place I the school holidays so that his education isn't interrupted.
