Tomorrow at 2:30pm History at the Hub / Hanes yn y Hwb

The third instalment in our popular 'History at the Hub' series of talks at Newport Rising Hub.

Les James and David Osmond explore the question: why did people become involved in radical politics in the 1810s and 1820s? We'll look at three local examples: John Frost, William Edwards and Samuel Etheridge; and the context: 1816, 'the year without summer', the end of the Napoleonic Wars, and the repressive government of 1815-1822.

170 Commercial Street, Newport NP20 1JN

Tickets available on a Pay What You Want basis. All funds to Our Chartist Heritage (charity no 1176673) and used to fund Newport Rising Festival and related educational activities.

Y drydedd ran yn ein cyfres boblogaidd o sgyrsiau 'Hanes yn y Ganolfan' yn Ganolfan Gwythryfel Casnewydd.

Mae Les James a David Osmond yn archwilio'r cwestiwn: pam y daeth pobl yn rhan o wleidyddiaeth radical yn y 1810au a'r 1820au? Byddwn yn edrych ar dri enghraifft leol: John Frost, William Edwards a Samuel Etheridge; a'r cyd-destun: 1816, 'y flwyddyn heb haf', diwedd Rhyfeloedd Napoleon, a'r llywodraeth orthrymus o 1815-1822.

Tocynnau ar gael ar sail Talwch Beth a Fynnoch. Defnyddir yr holl a***n i'n Treftadaeth Siartwyr (rhif elusen 1176673) ac i a***nnu Ŵyl Gwythryfel Casnewydd a gweithgareddau addysgiadol cysylltiedig.

Our Chartist Heritage / Newport Rising is seeking individuals to join our board of trustees, a group committed the legacy of Chartism and the Newport Rising of 1839. Trustees are integral to the governance and strategic direction of our charity, ensuring we continue to make a meaningful impact through initiatives such as the Newport Rising Festival, Chartist Convention, educational outreach in schools, and the vibrant Newport Rising Hub at the heart of our community.

The Newport Rising Festival, an annual event, commemorates the historic struggle for democratic rights, bringing the community together in reflection and celebration. Our educational outreach in schools inspires a new generation with the values of the Chartist movement, encouraging a deep, personal connection to the principles of democracy and active citizenship.

Joining us as a trustee means becoming part of a team dedicated to preserving this significant heritage and applying its lessons to foster a more informed, inclusive, and active community. This role offers the chance to contribute to the strategic vision of Our Chartist Heritage, ensuring that our work not only honours the past but also enriches the present and future of Newport and beyond. Being a trustee can be a way for individuals to gain valuable professional experience, expand networks and improve portfolios while delivering exciting work.

To apply or for more information, please contact Elin Jones via email at [email protected].

For an informal discussion about the role, you can also reach out to Melinda Drowley at [email protected].
