Follow 25 years in the life of Carys, who lives in a Welsh community by the sea and her mission to tackle the effects of climate change by educating the local villagers all while the tides are rising and the waters are coming in.

The Woman on the Hill is a bilingual theatre production.

The production blends Welsh folklore, original live music, and movement to tell the story drawn from lived experiences of tensions around environmental responsibility - drawn from and to resonate with our Welsh communities. Embedded with post-show discussions the tour aims to spark dialogue, foster community resilience, and inspire action.

As part of Spotlight, WOW Film Festival is building a new network of community film clubs across Wales, working with local partners and venues to bring independent and international cinema closer to home.

In collaboration with Newport Memorial Hall, WOW Film Festival is bringing a new community film club to Newport! Through this project, we hope to create a welcoming space for people to come together, discover films and enjoy cinema locally, building connections through shared experiences on the big screen.

Our screening at Newport Memorial Hall is THE TOLL, a darkly comic Welsh crime film set in rural Wales. Written and directed by Ryan Andrew Hooper, the film follows a toll-booth operator whose quiet, isolated life becomes entangled in a world of crime, corruption and unexpected twists.

Blending dark humour with a distinctly Welsh setting, THE TOLL offers a quirky and entertaining take on the crime thriller, bringing together an eccentric cast of characters in a story full of surprises.

Come along, discover a new film community at the Newport Memorial Hall, and pay what you feel. Your contribution helps support accessible community cinema and the development of future screenings.

About Spotlight
The BFI Film Audience Network (FAN) Spotlight programme invests in all eight hub regions across the UK, taking a hyper-local approach to areas where there are otherwise few or no screenings of UK independent or international film.

Working in three-year cycles, a lead delivery partner works with locally based film organisations to establish new community-driven screening activities and learning opportunities, helping projects continue into the future.

In Wales, WOW Film Festival is leading this initiative, working with local partners such as Cwm A***n to develop community film activity in venues and communities across the country.

Supported by Film Hub Wales as part of the BFI BFI Film Audience Network (FAN), made possible by the National Lottery.
