Drivers set to get new rights to challenge 'rip-off' private parking fines
Drivers are set to receive new rights to stand up to unfair private parking fines, the government has announced.

Among the new rights, which are to be enshrined in a new private parking code of practice, will be...

A guaranteed five minutes to decide whether to park;
A guaranteed 10 minutes to leave car parks without facing a penalty once the session has ended;
An appeal to get charges cancelled for honest mistakes (including stopping briefly to check directions) and problems outside drivers' control (vehicle breakdowns, medical emergencies, broken ticket machines);

A cap of £20 on charges for smaller mistakes such as forgetting parking permits, entering a vehicle registration wrong or forgetting to confirm the registration in a parking machine;
A cap of £100 on all private parking charges.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham said previous practices left "people feeling ripped off and out of pocket, so I'm putting a stop to them... while going after the deliberate scams that rip drivers off".

Step in the right direction' - but some demands not included

The number of parking tickets has surged from 14.4 million to 16.9 million over the year to the end of March, with the parking industry attributing the trend to the rising number of car parks being managed.

Both the AA and the RAC have praised the changes, with the RAC saying they are "a step in the right direction to protect drivers from poor practices".

However, establishing a unified appeals body and a ban on adding debt recovery fees on top of parking charge notices were not included, the organisation pointed out.

Charges would need to be stopped from "being issued in the first place" especially when there was no wrongdoing, the AA said, but added it was "hopeful" further measures could be added.

The Student Dependant Visa Changes: Who Can Bring Family to the UK Now?

This is a very strong topic because it affects married students, parents, and anyone planning to study in the UK with family members.

For many years, international students came to the UK with their families. A husband could study while the wife worked. Parents could bring children and build a new life together.
But the UK student visa system has changed.

Since January 2024, most international students starting courses are no longer able to bring dependants with them. The government introduced these restrictions as part of wider changes to reduce migration and prevent misuse of the student route.

WHO IS A DEPENDANT?
A dependant usually means:
-Your husband, wife or civil partner
-Your unmarried partner in certain circumstances
-Your child under 18
But being a family member does not automatically mean they can join you. You must meet the immigration requirements.

WHO CAN STILL BRING FAMILY?
Some students can still bring dependants.
For example:
✅ Students studying a PhD or doctoral qualification
✅ Students studying a research-based higher degree
✅ Certain government-sponsored students
But ordinary taught Master’s students and most undergraduate students starting new courses generally cannot bring dependants under the current rules.

THE BIG MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE
The biggest mistake is making decisions based on old information.
Someone may tell you:
‘My friend brought their wife to the UK.’
That may be true — but immigration rules depend on:
-when they applied,
-what course they studied,
-their visa category,
-and their personal circumstances.
Your friend’s experience is not always your legal option.

WHAT SHOULD STUDENTS DO NOW?
If you are planning to study in the UK and you have a family, ask yourself:
Is my course eligible for dependants?
Do I understand the financial requirements?
Can my family realistically manage if they cannot join immediately?
What is my long-term immigration plan?

Do not choose a course only because someone promised you a future in the UK.

THE REALITY CHECK
Studying in the UK can create opportunities, but immigration decisions require strategy.
The question is not:
‘How can I enter the UK?’
The better question is:
‘What is the best legal route for my future and my family?’”

Before you apply for a UK visa, research the current rules.

A patient was beaten and then strangled to death on a mental health ward while a staff member took a two-hour nap in a therapy room, an inquest has heard.

Hugo Flint-Cahan was being treated at Newham Mental Health Centre when he was fatally attacked by Rolando Torres-Pena during the early hours of the morning.

Nurses Rosemary Chukwuji-Ohanachum and Raji Olagunju were in a closed-door staff room and healthcare assistant Anthony Onuh was asleep in a therapy room.

Mr Flint-Cahan, who was unsettled that evening, was last seen on CCTV at 1.22am before he went into Torres-Pena's bedroom and disappeared from view. Torres-Pena, who was paranoid and had arrived on the ward five days earlier, was pacing the corridors before he was last seen on CCTV at 1.26am.

While the exact time of the attack is unclear, a patient in the room next-door appears in the corridor seemingly disturbed by something at 1.31am. It is now believed he was watching Mr Flint-Cahan's dying moments.

Just before 2am, Torres-Pena reappeared in the corridor wearing a towel around his waist after he removed his blood-soaked trousers. Around the same time, Onuh emerged from the therapy room holding bedding. Chukwuji-Ohanachum is seen heading into the same room holding blankets.

It took staff almost two hours to discover Mr Flint-Cahan's body. Emergency services were called 18 minutes later at 3.37am.

Olagunju, who found the body, did not attempt CPR or raise the alarm. He instead went to alert the night manager Alex Obamwonyi.

Witnesses described Chukwuji-Ohanachum screaming and throwing herself to the ground while a staff member performed chest compressions from 3.45am. Mr Flint-Cahan was declared dead at 4.41am.

Patients at the facility are supposed to be observed by a nurse every hour. Falsified records at 2am and 3am stated Mr Flint-Cahan was in his room.

Onuh admitted to filling the document out without checking where patients were. Torres-Pena admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and received a hospital order without time limit.

Nigerian Man K+lled in Car Cr@sh Shortly After Relocating to the UK

A Nigerian man, David Oyedeji Adediwura, has lost his life following a fatal road cr@sh in the United Kingdom. The incident happened at about 9:38 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, on Cory Wright Way in Wheathampstead.

According to Hertfordshire Police, a silver Vauxhall Astra carrying Adediwura and two other men collided with a grey BMW 840i. The three occupants of the Astra, aged in their 30s, 40s and 50s, were pronounced d+ad at the scene, while the BMW driver, a man in his 30s, sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

Following the tragedy, Adediwura’s former colleague at Yodel and DHL, Iretiayo Oyewole, launched a GoFundMe campaign with a £10,000 target to assist the late Nigerian’s wife and their three children.

His widow, Modinat Adebayo, paid an emotional tribute, describing his d+ath as the darkest moment of her life. She said they had relocated from Nigeria to the UK in search of a better future for their family, but their dreams were cut short by the tragic accident.
