YOPEY activities for care home residents

YOPEY activities for care home residents During the pandemic, the charity YOPEY has taken its intergenerational services online. On this page

Our young volunteers compile activities for elderly care home residents to do, from crosswords to exercise routines. They also write letters to ease the isolation of lonely residents, act in free variety shows to entertain residents, and mark art to decorate care homes. Each of these other initiatives has its own page:

THE SMILES SAY IT ALL

One YOPEY Befriender reported this week: "I ran a game where the residents were divided into two teams. I gave them a word and they raced to see which team could make the most words from my one word. It was great fun, and I want to run more activities for the residents."

This partnership is supported by , which owns Oak House, and Waitrose & Partners (Welwyn Garden City), where YOPEY is competing for £1500 donation. If you shop there, drop a green token in YOPEY Befriender's perspex box.

SMILES AND LAUGHTER ALL ROUND

Photos from the final befriending session between Health and Social Care students from at Hall Care Home, in Hethersett, near Norwich.

During the five sessions, organised by this charity after training the year 10s and their teacher, there were many interactions between .

Some have formed firm friendships and at least one girl told YOPEY they would be returning to the Barchester HealthCare
home with their families to introduce their new friends (who are often older than their own grandparents).

BEING ARTY-AND-CRAFTY TOGETHER

YOPEY visited The Grange Care Home in near in to photograph the YOPEY Befrienders from Joyce Frankland Academy taking part in activities.

Here's a set of lovely images of teenager Phoenix, who is in her final year of taking A-levels, taking time out from her studies to join in an arts-and-crafts session with a few of The Grange's residents.

The laughter and smiles show how much fun the different generations are having together.

HOW I MET MY DREAM BOY

Just one hour of social interaction per week can improve the quality of life for people with dementia in care homes.

That is exactly how much time we ask YOPEY Befrienders – young people who volunteer with this charity – to spend with elderly care home residents each week.

In this 90-second video, a resident, over 90 years old, tells YOPEY Befrienders about she met her husband of 67 years.
At YOPEY, we believe stories like hers remind us why intergenerational connection matters. Our mission is to bridge the gap between young and old — fostering empathy, friendship, and shared understanding.

Watch this short video and feel inspired by the memories that shaped a lifetime of love. ❤️
