Are you looking for creative work space in Newhaven?

Please take this quick survey to let us know what you need.

The aim of the survey is to evidence the extent of the demand for artist/creative studio and work space at the Marine Workshops, the Sidings, and beyond in Newhaven, and what kinds of spaces are needed.

Responding to the amazing growth of the creative sector in Newhaven, this survey is aimed at creative people and organisations who are ready to move into paid-for work spaces.

COMING INTO THE LIGHT opens next week at the Marine Workshops - an exhibition of new works by Johanna Berger 👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼

So excited to invite you to my first solo show in a long while. All new work. Expect large, colourful, abstract, oil paintings, on canvas- as well as some watercolour studies for context.

A brief opportunity to see these paintings in one room, so don’t miss it.

Join Johanna for the Private View on Friday October 23rd 6-8 pm, or message Johanna Berger to come on a quieter tour.

Coming to the Marine Workshops galleries in early 2027 from Sarah Stirk ~

Very happy to say that following on from Airborne, my new project Waterborne, is coming to life.

The team and I have spent the last year talking to scientists, wading in and out of rivers and working with incredible community groups and campaigners from across the River Lea (London), the River Ouse (Sussex) and the Sussex Bay along the South Coast. - three key areas that are the focus of this new investigative artwork.

As most of us are aware, our waterways are in crisis. A toxic mix of chemicals, heavy metals, road and agricultural runoff, microplastics, and sewage means that only 14% of England’s rivers are considered to be in good ecological condition, with 75% in the UK posing a serious threat to human health.

Environment Agency data released this summer show that 100% of assessed surface water bodies and rivers in England fail to meet good chemical standards.

The seas that surround our island are being illegally flooded with raw sewage and hospital admissions for waterborne diseases in England rose 60% since 2010. People, wildlife and nature are suffering but water companies are putting up their prices, prioritizing shareholders and building fines into their budgets. There have been promises from the government but we have yet to see any real change.

Whilst large plastic/marine debris, algal blooms and sewage spills can sometimes be seen, much of this pollution remains invisible.

Exposing it at different scales, the project explores toxicity and resilience within ecosystems and communities, moving between beauty and unease, data and the creative realm.

Waterborne is part of Wildlight’s creative branch.

So excited to be back and a part of Photo Fringe at the Newhaven Open this October 🦋

I’ll be showing extracts from my project “The Shimmer” alongside a bunch of other amazing local artists whose projects also focus on the local landscape.

“Did you know the South Downs used to be blue”, a stranger asked me. I did not. I was later told that this blue-shimmer effect was caused by the vast Chalk Hill Blue butterfly populations that used to inhabit the very hills that watch over Sussex. This sight has long disappeared however, muffled by human interventions to the landscape. Although spontaneously emerging against all odds in 2012, the South Downs have not regularly turned blue for almost 100 years. The Shimmer explores in tandem both the emotional experience of the imagined phenomena alongside social historical shifts in relationships to ecology. Shifts so big that now the land itself cannot sustain the very spectacle that my mind endeavours to imagine.

Beauty in strange places.

See Grot o Rama by Bertie Taylor as part of Photo Fringe at the Marine Workshops 👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼

Photo fringe festival begins on Friday until the end of October. I’m exhibiting some work at the Newhaven marine workshops.
Here’s some info on the exhibition!

Grot o Rama : The beauty in urban decay.

This exhibition seeks to find beauty in everyday scenes which we may often overlook or initially deem unpleasant to the eye. Having grown tired of visiting the usual popular spots and tourist locations, Bertie began exploring off the beaten track to find intrigue and an aesthetic in the unlikeliest places. His series began and was inspired here in Newhaven. He then travelled further afield across Europe in his grandfather’s Toyota Yaris to photograph Grot and urban scenes all over the continent seeking to unlock the mysteries hidden in the mundane everywhere!
